why is the only way to reestablish my internet connection to sleep?

Recently, when I lose my internet connection and this photograph appears: why is the only way to reestablish my internet connection to sleep?-symbol.png

the ONLY way to get back online is to sleep the computer and start Windows again. Why? This takes a long time. I can select the network from the list but it will not reconnect. Waiting doesn't work.

This happens on 2 laptops, on 2 networks, in 2 states.

    Hi

    When did this start?

What changes were made around this time?

What is the version number of Windows 10 and build number? (Right click Start > Run > type Winver, enter)

    How old are the laptops?

What wifi adapter is installed on the two devices? (info should be available in device manager)

Within the properties of each adapter there is a power management tab, remove check mark on "Allow the computer to turn off device to save power"

When they die have you ever run trouble shoot problems. Right click on globe, then Troubleshoot

Are you running any special communication software, something from Corporate, a VPN, etc

When did it start? A few weeks ago! But it happens on another computer on another connection in another state.

    No changes.

    Windows 1903 (OS Build 18362.836)

Can't tell the age of the laptop but it came with windows 7.

Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter

    Now I've turned that off.

    I have not.

    False.

Is the same adapter installed in both computers?

Are you traveling with your own router for security reasons?

Perhaps it's a power management issue.

Go to Device Manager, expand Network Adapters, right-click the adapter > Properties > Power Management, and then clear the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" check box.

No clue. It's whatever they came with.

I am not traveling with my own router.

Can I buy an external wifi card and connect that one instead? My computer is a laptop but I use it as a computer because the screen doesn't work, so if there's an external card I don't care. As long as it doesn't stop the connection. I think perhaps the bigger question is WHY do I have to reboot when this happens? How come I can't just open the menu and choose another connection, or the same connection, and be online again like I do regularly?

I'll bet if you run network trouble shooter you wouldn't have to reboot.

Yes you can buy a modern USB WIFI dongle. So are very small so not a lot a fear of breaking, others are bigger.

I wouldn't buy cheap nor would I but most expensive.

    As an example

    Rosewill N300 Wireless USB Wi-Fi Adapter, 300 Mbps Data Rate, USB 2.0 - Newegg.com

Buying one that is very fast (AC1200) and plugging into USB 2.0 port defeats the purpose.
