    Proxy settings

I had been getting "unable to connect" and then a second or two later, page loaded. Sometimes though, page did not load. I can imagine that internet connections are heavily loaded these days, but I thought I should check how Win 10 is configured. I did the 'upgrade' fairly recently to Win10 Pro and presume it used default proxy settings.

In Settings, there is a choice under Proxy - Automatic Proxy Setup to set 'Automatically detect Settings' ON or OFF. It seems the default that Win10 chose was ON. I have now turned it OFF. Seems to have helped - no error before loading although page loading is still quite slow.

By the way, using Chrome. I checked and see it uses Win 10 proxy settings. Simple home network connected via router, cable modem to ISP.

What is the recommended setting for automatically detect ?

I open Internet Options in Control Panel or in Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab and LAN Settings to put a checkmark in only the first item. Using Proxy settings may be up to the ISP's needs but they will tell what is needed.

No Control panel or Internet Explorer any more on my Win10 Pro :) Accessed Proxy via Settings.

My question was whether or not the first item should be checked. I have decided to uncheck it. Works either way, and ISP forum member said to uncheck it. But still not sure what is best.

Maybe a Win10 Communications expert can explain when and where automatic proxy detection should be turned on or off.

You would never normally set a proxy if it's using one that you haven't installed it's either malware or anti virus which set up a proxy on your PC so it can scan all internet traffic. The only reason for a proxy normally is that it gives a different IP from yours when you connect so it means you can access content from other countries

Guess I should have pointed out where to find the same settings in Start, Settings but that's the problem with making assumptions.
