Password protection turned off, Windows keep asking about credentials.

    Situation and configuration:
Home network with 6 computers. All with Windows 10, newest update 1909. The settings are the same on all computers: network set as private, password protected sharing turned off, each computer has an „Exchange” folder shared for „everyone” group with read/write privileges. Each computer is in the same workgroup. Each has ip 192.168.0.X. Unfortunately, it does not work as intended:
    • Computer #1 can access all other computers and none of them are asking for credentials.
    • Computer #1 can be accessed from all other computers without asking for credentials.
    • Computers #2, #3, #4, #5, #6: without asking for credentials can access only themselves and computer #1. Trying to access any other computer results in the credentials window popping up. After entering credentials access is granted.
    • I have no account on computer #1 and #3. I do have on all others. But i think it is not relevant here

I would like to have just a simple situation: everything works like computer #1 does now. Where is the problem? I start to believe it is a kind of magic, but maybe you have a logical explanation? Additionally one strange thing: To access computer #2 form computer #3 #4 #5 or #6 I need to use credentials of local account of computer #2. Trying to access it using Microsoft account username and password does not work. I get an error message “wrong username or password”. I use Microsoft account on computer #2 since… a very long time. Years, I think

One hint: On some computers folder “Users” is not shared. It should be shared by default, but I think I unshared it once. Can it have an influence?

It's simpler if when you login to any PC if you have an account on that PC with same name and password as by default windows pass the username password that your logged in with . The other main problem is have you set NTFS permission on the folders as that will kill it you need both share and NTFS permission set correct . What folders are you sharing as some folders within users profile have special permission set

    Hi, thanks for answer,
    1. Computer #1 and #3 are not mine. I will not have accounts there. I want just exchange data sometimes and it should work. It works on computer #1, so it's possible. It's not related to accounts on computers then.
    2. The priviliges for sharing and for NTFS are set correct, i checked. I can access folders if I log in with username and pasword. Beside this even if I try to access only the computer, not a folder (like (\\adamoos) i am asked for username and password too. So it is 100% not related to the share/NTFS priviliges neither.

There must be a difference between computer #1 and the rest. The question is where?

There is one new important finding: All works fine on new created accounts. So the issue is related to account/profile. Maybe I could just create new accounts, replace old ones with new ones and forget. But it is a huge work to do it each computer for each account. Additionally I have no guarantee that the problem won't come back after a while, cos it is caused for example by a software. Any ideas how to investigate it?

What happens if you re-share that one folder?

It has changed nothing. The problem still exists. Of course, except for this newly created account, which has no problem accessing all computers without credentials.

One more important findong: changing a new local account to a Microsoft account (connected to the newly created email address) causes the problem to reappear. Changing the account back to local one makes everything work again...

    Ps.
Is it possible to edit posts? I didn't found...
    Edit:
Now I see. Editing is possible only for limited time after posting probably.

I only have two computers, sharing. I found that using the credentials of each computer was the way to be able to share. Use the new email and the password that you gave to that computer, lets you in. See if that works for you.

    Hi,

Thanks for tip. With entering credentials it works. That's not the point. I want to have it working without entering or saving credentials. For example friend is visiting me, he acces my network, he can access shared folder and I don't need to tell him any credentials.
