Windows 10 Network. Selective access restriction query

I have a small Windows 10 network consisting of five good spec PC’s on a peer-to-peer network. All PC’s have their own primary software applications but data from all workstations are saved to a shared folder on a shared secondary hard drive on one of the PC’s (which also conducts backups of the shared drive to either of two external drives on an alternating daily basis).

All PC’s run Windows 10 Professional.

Each workstation has its own primary purpose in that one performs the firm’s accounting functions, one runs Autocad, one raises bespoke technical quotations for clients, one runs bespoke technical testing software and one is overall Administrator, email hub and all-round general dogsbody (being the one upon which the shared files, earlier referred to, are located).

It occurs to me that, in its current state, any workstation can access any folder or file within the shared location. Some of this is sensitive and should only be shared between the accounts and the administration PC.

Please could someone direct me to a tutorial or guide, should such exist, which might describe how I may restrict access to certain folders/files in the shared location, whilst granting access to others? I have explored the Internet but have not been fortunate enough to find any tutorial which quite works for my purposes for one reason or another.

    Thanks in advance.

This post by @angelotti [#11] seems to address your issue

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Could I perhaps be coming at this from the wrong end in that, given all the workstations currently do have access to the shared data drive and shared folder, I do not need to actually grant any of them access (which has already been achieved). Rather, I wish to deny access to certain folders within the main data folder but only to selective workstations.

Say, for example, I have 2 folders located in the shared folder, on the shared drive, named:

    1] Accounts_Data
    2] Company_Data

    And I have 5 users:

    1) [Accounting]
    2] [Admin]
    3] [Cad]
    4] [Quoting]
    5] [Testing]

I want [Accounting] and [Admin] to maintain their current access to both folders.
But, whilst I want [Cad] and [Quoting] and [Testing] to maintain their current access to the Company_Data folder, I want them to be denied access to the Accounts_Data folder. So, can I not "simply" create share attributes/protocols pertaining solely to the Accounts_Data folder which either:

    a) Actively affords access only to [Accounting] and [Admin] or
    b) Actively denies access only to [Cad] and [Quoting] and [Testing]

    ?

    Thanks, again, for any guidance.

    Seb

    Seb,

Your requirements are exactly what the angelotti procedure is for.
