Is there any utility or software that would let you know, hopefully with an alert, if someone was trying to access your system or network in real time?

Yes but not really any I know for retail.

We also use to run Tripwire on our infrastucture. It was expensive and you needed a logging system. Then you scanned logs for specific events. One event we always looked for was server admins logging on as general Admin instead of using there own named credentials.

Maybe searching Intrusion Detection or software like Tripwire may result in something.

Also I've seen many ads on Glasswire but I think that is more after the fact, you analyze activity.

I am not sure of this is helpful but I do know that Norton antivirus has this feature. Not to be confused with a firewall feature. I just started using the basic protection plan that comes free from my ISP with no firewall. (I use glasswire for that) And it will pop up a notification in the bottom right corner (I saw it yesterday!) if there is an instrusion or attack attempt. Here is some info: Intrusion Prevention System (IPS): Your first line of defense against malware | Norton Community

Hope it helps! Just an idea.

It has been years but I believe Zone alarm has a product that may perform the function you're looking for. Check this review here.

If you'd like to give Zone Alarm Firewall a free spin, check here to download directly.

Or to check all of their premium products for a free test-drive, check here.

I tried the new zone alarm last week from checkpoint and I would be wary and stay away! It installed a bunch of files and I almost couldn't get it all removed from my system! I would use comodo firewall if he wants a free product over this one. But I don't know if he really meant firewall.

No, not another firewall. Something more like a sentinel.

I was playing around with the netstat command switches to see what I could see, but that ouput's all Greek to me.
