Windows 10.0.18362.720: How to share a particular folder such that the full physical path is displayed,


For example, in the screenshot below, the folder called “Amjad” is shared. What I need here is to have the full path for the shared folder displayed as below:


\\Jamalnuman\c\Amjad
But not as:
\\JAMALNUMAN\Amjad


How this might be managed?

That naming convention is incorrect. From a directory structure point of view the path is

C:\Amjad.

For a UNC path the naming convention is

\\Server_Name\Share_Name\Subfolder\Subfolder.... etc.

If the path were to be displayed as \\jamalnuman\c\Amjad this would imply that you are connected to a share named "c" which is incorrect. The share to which you are connecting is named "Amjad" so it displays as \\Server_Name\Amjad.

Even if the share was 10 directory levels down, you would never see the names of the directories above the share. In fact, you would normally not even want users to know of the very existence of those other folder names for security reasons.

Does that make sense?

I got the answer. In order to get the full physical path for the shared folder, the $ can be used

\\Jamalnuman\c$\Amjad

Jamal, just for clarification, that means that you ARE NOT connecting to the "Amjad" share. Instead, you are now connecting to Amjad through the "C$" share. The difference is that when you connect to C$ you have access to Amjad, arcgisserver, Autodesk, etc. If you were to connect to Amjad directly, you would have no access to those folders.

BTW, the $ at the end of a share name simply makes the share hidden. You can still connect to it, but it will not show up in browse lists.
