Connects to network but not to Internet

I take my SW1-011 tablet/laptop with me whenever we travel, including visits to my Mum in law's every couple of months. I've never had any trouble getting it to connect to her Wi-FI in the past.

Last week I had to re-installing Win10 because I couldn't get it to update to 1909. At home it connects to our own network perfectly but when I tried connecting to her network last week I got a message about the network being old (I should have taken a screen cap of it) and it connected to her network but not to to the Internet.

My wife tells me she has been seeing the same message for months when she connects her tablet/laptop (SW3-013) but then it connects and works normally.

Is there anything I can do the next time to make mine connect?

Without a proper error its hard to say but best guess its an old router that doesnt have modern encryption so would be a security risk on the net. If you connect again open a cmd prompt type

    ipconfig /all

See if it has a default gateway set if not that is the problem you can get it manually to the ip of the router which will show as dhcp server

Old router or not if I want to connect when I'm there it is my only option so I would really like to find a way to do so.

I'll be there again at the end of the month and when I get there I won't be able to connect right away so I'll have to save everything I can find out about how to connect on my computer before I go and hope something works.

She is almost 90 and has no clue what she has and my brother in law that looks after that sort of stuff is difficult to get information from so it would be next to impossible to find out the exact model.
BUT I have a lot of computer stuff here that belonged to our late son and there is a Netgear WGR614 in it that looks very much like hers.

"Is there anything I can do the next time to make mine connect""

Yes, make a couple of screenshots!!!!

Usually when you can connect to the LAN but not the Internet is a problem with the default gateway. Which in turn could be related to the DHCP handled by the router. Or it could be a DNS issue.

Next time, trying pinging the router and a public dns like 8.8.8.8...

If thats the router it belongs in a museum its very old only g type which is crawling speed and very old encryption so no modern encryption types its like in pc terms running a 286 thats why they are on sale for £7 routers are so cheap so you really need a new one as the risks running one that old are great

I do have a newer one. In fact, I have the newer router/modem provided by out ISP and a newer old modem that functions as a repeater in the other end of the house.

Unfortunately, I have no control over what my Mum in law has and how it is set up. I'm in a bit of a bind with this one because I'll be staying there while my wife has life threatening but absolutely necessary surgery in a few weeks and I would really like to be able contact the outside world while I'm there.

I think I have a plan. In addition to my SW1 I will take another laptop running a recent installation of Win7 in hopes that it will connect to the internet there and I can use it to access this thread and try the suggestions in it and post what her equipment actually is.

I'm at Mum in Law's now. My wife survived her procedure (they basically rebooted her heart to get it into the proper rhythm) and everyone else is napping so Mum is letting me use her laptop to access the internet. If all goes well I may be able to check back here again later today or in the morning.

Here's what I've been able to find out:
    - My SW1 still only connects to the network with no internet and my Win7 laptop won't either.
    - Her router is a WGR614 as I thought. Very old BUT the only ones having problems connecting to it are my wife & I. The brother in law had no trouble getting a laptop with a fresh install of Win10 to connect and the one I'm typing this on is connected.
    - I have taken screenshots but I don't have a way to transfer them from my SW1 to this computer (I can post them when I'm home if this isn't fixed before then) but here is the important info:

    The error message says:
    (network name) isn't secure
This Wi-Fi network uses an older
    security standard. We recommend
    connecting to a different network.
Wireless (this line in very small letters)
And a button that says "Learn more" which tries to open a web page but since it won't connect to the internet I have no idea what the page says (typical Microsoft logic).

I tried running the Internet Connections troubleshooter. It reset the network adapter (no difference) and then said

    Problems found

"Wi-Fi" doesn't have a valid IP configuration Not fixed

    Re post#2:
I ran ipconfig/all. There is nothing in the line Default Gateway so I assume it is not set.
I do not see a line for DHCP server.

    Re post #6:
I had to look up how to ping. Not knowing if this router's actual IP address is the standard one or has been changed for some reason I tried pinging 198.165.1.1 and it returned 4 results of
    "PING: transmit failed. General failure.

I tried it again for 8.8.8.8 with the same result.
