OneDrive not running - reset won't work - how to get latest version?

OneDrive isn't running at startup. I can manually start in from Start > All Programs > OneDrive.
Have been trying to figure out why it doesn't start in the first place.

    1. I followed a recommendation to run OneDriveSetup.exe
Running Windows 10 x64 I gave it a try to run this file from C:\Windows\SysWOW64, but got an error
"A newer version of OneDrive is installed - You need to uninstall it first before installing this version."
Noticed that indeed a newer version is available in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\

Q: I am not sure whether I should use that file to install OneDrive.

    2. I then tried to follow a suggestion from another thread here saying to reset OneDrive.
    Win-R %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

    But got an error
Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe'.Make sure you've typed the name correctly, then try again.

    Q: How to proceed now?
Hesitate to copy the x86 OneDriveSetup.exe to SysWOW64 and run the .exe from there.
Maybe it is okay, but I simply don't know (and do not want to try)

    Thanks!

Is it scheduled to start up - check in Task Manager > Startup tab > find Microsoft OneDrive in the list and make sure it's "Enabled"

    Thanks for the suggestion.
The reason why I wanted to do a reset or re-install is to indeed get OneDrive in that list. Currently it isn't.

By any chance have you recently initialized the OneDrive 'Personal Vault' option?

If so, this might explain the missing file in %localappdata%.

When I did, back in September, Windows un-installed OneDrive out of my user level and re-installed for '/allusers' into either “Program Files (x86)” or “Program Files" depending on architecture.

New OneDrive behavior after Personal Vault Setup

This according to documentation which I subsequently found when I noticed this new “OneDriveSetup.exe /allusers” command.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/one...e-installation

( Side note: Oddly the doc has changed since my posts in September to now include "Program Files" for 64 bit machines, where as my original quote taken directly from that online doc only mentioned - “Program Files (x86)” in the same sentence and where back then for my 64bit machine this new Onedrive.exe was re-installed. )

When attempting to update, I do remember getting this latest version Error message as well, which as I recall, was tied to not using this new '/allusers' switch.

I had, and still have OneDrive set to NOT run at Startup.

So I'm not sure of that issue, other than what I'd try. Suggesting you start Onedrive.exe manually from the appropriate "Program Files", then under Settings>, uncheck "Start OneDrive automatically when I sign into Windows", shut OneDrive down. Remove the Startup entry if it's still there, start Onedrive.exe manually again and then Tick that box again to start OneDrive automatically.

For me the entire experience ended up being yet another Windows 10 "Lesson Learned".

    Personal Vault
Back in September, when Personal Vault was first introduced, I took the click bait to what's really Microsoft's path to get you to subscribe to Office 365. Otherwise there's a 3 file limit to this Vault, even with a 100G subscription.

Afterwards, when I found getting rid of the remnants of Personal Vault was getting a bit ugly, it now with all of it's new installed and unnecessary architecture, which I found included a new BitLocker container, I just quickly re-imaged back to before my curiosity clicked on that 'Try Personal Vault', with all it's subsequent changes.

    1. Were you trying to install another copy of OneDrive to Windows 10?
    2. Also, if you follow the C"\Users address is their a onedrive.exe there?

    @Farvatten
Thanks for your elaborate reply. I tried the suggestions in the other thread.
    Also with sfc /scannow and
    Win-R "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\20.028.0206.0006\OneDriveSetup.exe" /allusers

The last one started setup, but it closed after a few seconds. OneDrive was running, but after reboot, it wasn't running anymore.

For one reason or the other the option "Start OneDrive automatically when I sign in to Windows" in OneDrive > Settings was unchecked. For sure I did not do that. No reason to do that.

Also, over the last two days, my password manager needed to be launched manually, whereas it is always running in the background after PC boot. Similar to OneDrive it disappeared from the Task Manager > Startup list.

Only solution was to re-install it.

    All above aside.
In my case, the solutions were relatively simple.
But frankly speaking, I really wonder how less experienced users who are neither visiting forums, nor being familiar with registry settings, Win-R matters, etc. would solve such issues...

Anyway, thanks again for your suggestions/reply!
