SMB1 and Printer/Scanning to folder - win 10 any ver

    Hi Gang,

Thought I'd post, see what info may come forth from the great people here.

I have one cleint (of several) who it seems has the need for SMB 1.0 in order for the network printer to be able to scan to a PC folder.

I've tested with Kyocera and Konica Minolta's (Having a forgetful moment on which brand this particular client is using ... oy)

Thing is, he has an HP laptop, and in win 10 (home or pro, any build though most are up to 1909) have the SMB 1.0 client and server enabled, and the auto turn off not checked, however after a while it seems windows goes ahead and turns off one of those options anyway, either from an update or from who knows where, forcing him to go back to re-enable.

(Right now my setups are simple; 1.0 client and server checked, folder shared out, I typically add a local user to the system with scanner/scanner, and then add that info into the MFC for scanning to the network share, be it on a server or workstation.)

    Any solution for this occurring?

And in the larger context, any way around not having SMB 1.0 on and still being able to use the scan to network folder with these business printer/copiers/multi-functions?

I know the reasons for 1.0 being phased out, but it seems the business printer community doesn't realize it, or I need to implement another configuration on win 10 to accomplish this without 1.0.

    Thoughts?

I have an HP {"business"} printer-copier-scanner on my home network. It's an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477fdw
    I do not have SMB1.
I do not have any problems printing or scanning to computer folders.

I know nothing about domain networks / managed networks.
    - They have additional considerations because they want users to use network drives but, possibly, have not implemented SMB2/3 on the network.
    - The common reason for still needing SMB1 is that network equipment [routers, switches, possibly even network printers] still use it.
    - Perhaps you could study the specs of the troublesome network printers-scanners to find out what they need but, again I'm speaking from domain-ignorance, perhaps it's the overall network setup that requires SMB1 and those printers-scanners merely have to live with the results.

Thinking about it a bit more, perhaps these articles might contain useful info. And you could ask about your situation in the TenForums one because SMB-aware people seem to be posting in it.

I have 2 HP printers connected to my Wireless Router and in Windows features have only SMB Direct checked. Both printers, HP LaserJet MFP M148dw and HP OfficeJet Pro 8600, are connected via Ethernet cable but any computer I install the software on whether Wired or Wireless/Wi-Fi can print to either as desired.

I have noticed that some windows CU's will change some system settings. However I do not use SMB1.

But with out details on the printers manufacture and model number, its difficult to provide an answer.

I knew I could count on you guys. :)

Denis, most of the network I'm addressing are not domain managed, some not even using a"server" in terms of an actual server using a server OS, just file sharing using win 10 PC's to fulfill that function (If my current boss were smart he'd let me set them up domain with AD, see, he likes to bill by the hour, so adding a workstation and letting the mapped drivers and printers, etc. setup themselves thru group policy doesn't stretch out the time onsite ... oy.)

I'm thinking of experimenting with one network as a test bed to see what results I get, trying SMB direct only, 2&3, etc.

I know some printers list as 2 and 3 compatible,m some need a FW update for it.

I might also try just opening those ports in the FW even if 1.0 support not turned on, but likely won't leave it in that config.

Mostly it is the lower end printers that just haven't been updated to use 2-3 vice 1.0, as that would likely cost the manufacturer $$$ to perform, though why a FW update cant be implemented is beyond me.

IMO, they have been safe for a bit with it, but now they may be forced to deal with it as malware may now spread by the protocol.

Berton, thanks much, however I'm talking about scanning to a network folder, not printing.

One thing I do like about the newer HP software (HP smart) is that it bypasses SMB as well, and allows the user to, by default, scan to the documents folder locally. Have thought about altering the path to a network folder, but not sure I can make that stick, or if I can have it authenticate.
