Would anyone care to share their experience with NAS boxes like WD or Buffalo. Are they secure ? Do you have to enable smb1 to make them work ? I would like to know how these work out with windows 10 and how hard they are to set up.
How does windows see it ?
    Thank you

I have the WD 4-Bay Diskless My Cloud Pro - PR4100. I stuck 4 WD Red Pro 6TB drives in it and upped the RAM from 4 to 16gig. Set it up in RAID 10 and it's been running straight for near a year without issue.

Didn't need to enable smb1 in Windows and it's not enabled on the unit either. I stream music from it using Plex without issue. The unit is connected to my router via a Cat CAT5E cable. I had to buy a cable cause the one that shipped with the unit was something like 12 inches. WTH

All this under Windows 10 x64 Pro (latest 1909 update). All good here. Be aware the dashboard for the unit is online so you'll need setup an online account to operate and access the unit. I'm sure WD is not alone here.

Great thanks for sharing that. I looked up raid 10. Mirroring protects from hardware failure. Raid 10 looks like its the best of both worlds. It is nice to know that I do not have to go with a windows server only to share files for my group of 3 computers

Yes RAID 10 is the best of both world in performance and redundancy. However, it comes at the expense of half your total storage space. In my case having a total of 24TB between 4 x 6TB drives running them in RAID 10 only nets 12TB, of which only 10.8 is usable. In short RAID 10 cuts your storage space in half

Somewhere down the line I may break it for more storage but for now my needs only equate to 4TB.

Yeah, in my case a NAS is far more economical and easy to deal with.

    And thanks

I have 2 x 2TB WDC My Cloud drives connected by Ethernet cable to my 4-port Router and 8-port Switch, Any computer, Wired or Wireless/Wi-Fi, that I map the Public folders on them can access the Folder and files, they are used only for storage, do not have any installed programs on them. And they work with Windows, Linux and Mac OS X or the newer macOS. Windows sees them formatted as NTFS, Linux Mint sees them formatted as ext4 and I think Mac saw them as HPFS [it died on me, too expensive to fix or replace].

    Here is my NAS:
    My New Build!

It does not require SMBv1 to be enabled. Windows 10 sees it as \\Server1. I had tons of fun, literal fun, setting it up. It is now also running Plex Media Server to serve all my media files stored on the NAS to my smart TV and mobile devices. It basically stripes the equivalent of two pairs of hard drives set up as RAID 0 (4x 3 TB HDDs in a mirrored array with a total of 6 TB storage). There is also 1 spare HDD in there that will get automatically swapped into the array should FreeNAS detect one of the operating drives is failing.

That's good to hear. I have been contemplating getting one of these NAS devices for my house for a while. I currently run a small desktop as a server with an i3 and a pair of hard drives that back each other up, but it's started to get a little old and I would like to move on.

I have a couple of Mac's in my household, so being able to use the device as my TimeMachine backup location would be nice. At present, I just have a pair of 1TB external USB 3 drives that I connect to each Mac and take occasional backups.

Is there much heat or noise that comes off the device? It's likely going into the closest in the game room next to our switch. That room already stays a bit on the warm side with the equipment running in there already.

I've not noticed any heating issues. In fact I've not noticed the unit getting hot at all. As for noise there is the standard HDD thrashing when data is moved. Outside of that the unit is quiet. The only time it really gets loud is when first starting up where the 120mm fan maxes out then quickly dies down to silent.

BTW my average room temps year round is about 25 Celsius (77 F).

One of my coworkers had a Buffalo Station that failed on him taking both drives with it...but everything is going to fail at some point and my understanding is that one really should not use a NAS as backup (ie. back up the data on your NAS) even though I think most people see it as that.

No matter the backup solution someone will say it isn't infallible. Use what makes you comfortable.

    Peace:)
