Print sharing

I have a problem with one of my clients regarding print sharing. The problem is with an HP deskjet 2130 after installing the software and drivers my client wanted to share the printer with his wife's computer. I set up the sharing on his computer in properties it accepted the share but when I went to the wife's computer to add the printer it could not find it. I went back to the main computer and clicked on properties and Sharing both the tick in share this printer and render print jobs on client's computer were grayed out. I have spent hours on google but could not find a fix for it can anybody help.

Network printer (ethernet as you said its not wireless) or is it attached to a particular machine. Depending on the answer there are 2 solutions available.

It is attached to main computer by usb cable.

For sharing a printer which is attached to a specific machine (note that the machine will have to be up for printer to be shared) follow simple instructions here :

"Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW).

assume the computers are call MACHINE1, MACHINE2 --assume printer is attached to Machine 1.

1) Ensure Printer on MACHINE1 machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

2) On the Network Browsing on your MACHINE2 ensure you can "See" the Printer share. For this to work you'll probably need to enable SMB1 on BOTH machines if they are W10. If only one machine is W10 enable SMB1 on that machine. Reboot if you had to add SMB1 -- reboot both machines if SMB1 added to both.

Now on the MACHINE 2 do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the other machine into thinking it's running the printer. (On W10 the control panel still exists simply on the Windows menu button - the Win symbol - type control panel)

4) Create NEW port==>Local port

5) Portname is \\MACHINE1\SHAREDPRINTER

6) Now MACHINE2 will load a driver and you'll be able to print FROM MACHINE2 on to the printer on the MACHINE1 machine.


(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address. This could for example be a stand alone printer attached to a router / wifi extender or whatever.


If the printer is on the MACHINE2 machine and you want to print on the MACHINE1 machine then do the same instructions on the MACHINE1 machine --
port name in this case will be \\MACHINE2\SHAREDPRINTER

BTW newer printers might have their own software but this method should always work if a printer attached to a specifc computer needs to be shared with others.
