    Network Oddity

    Hi,

This is my first post. I hope it's coherent.

I have two Windows 10 Pro 1909 (OS 18363.657) machines on my LAN - Alpha and Beta.

Alpha and Beta can each see each other - no discovery problems.

From Beta, I can click on the Alpha Icon and access all the shares on Alpha - so far, so good.

From Alpha, I click on the Beta Icon and am rudely told that I do not have permission to access Beta.

However, if I type \\Beta\Users\user\share into Alpha's File Explorer address bar and wait about 10 seconds, I have access to all shares on Beta.

    Weird, eh?

Welcome to the forum. Have you setup shares on both pcs and given everyone full control then set NTFS permissions on the folders?
If you type \\beta its likeley you will get no reply that the pc you connect to a share \\beta\sharename or \\beta\c$

To the best of my knowledge, I've shared everything on Beta and I've set the NTFS permissions on the shared folders. Considering the problem, I've probably missed a high level share or permission. I just can't find it.

The thing I find most interesting is how easy it is to gain access to all Beta shares even though permission to access Beta directly is not granted.

    Close Out

    This may close-out the thread.

After testing everything I could think of and following contemporary comments on this forum (and many other internet sites), I believe the OS on Beta is broken.

To recap: Alpha and Beta see each other, there are no discovery problems.

Beta can access all shares on Alpha when I click on the Alpha icon. Alpha can access all shares on Beta if I type \\Beta\Users, there are no folder permissions problems.

The only glitch is that Alpha cannot access shares on Beta when I click on the Beta icon or if I type \\Beta\.

At this point, I can only conclude that bit of Beta's OS is broken and the only fix would be to reinstall Windows - which I'm not going to do cos' the cure may turn out to be far worse than the disease.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
