Mine worked fine yesterday and today (to my surprise), and no problem about using the shared folders- no need for sub-folders in my case. I did notice the same PC listed twice under Networking in one dialogue box I'd not used before.

No doubt Windows 10 networking/file/printer sharing is glitchy at best.

I have never had the issue, drag and drop or copy paste work between computer on my network, I generally download windows updates to one of my computer the copy to the install folder on my other computers. I have a folder on each computer Windows updates I download each from Windows catalog don't trust the standard update process and prefer to manually run these update in my own time. I Have drag and dropped but usually copy Paste since its one less action to get each WU on each computer one copy and paste to the other three. I guess you might call my Windows Update folder sub folder to Drive Folder IE E:\Window Updates Perhaps I'm not understanding your issue or your having a local issue still? My Shares are set up to Share entire drives with the exception of C: My OS Drives only share certain folders.

I did mention that occasionally my 24-7 computers I will have to restart the Function services. They will show as running however restarting them my shares on them show up again. this is kind of a hassle that I don't remember having with W7 or W8 This has only started after MS decided that SMB 1 was not secure and there updates unchecked the feature for me. That was awhile back. there were several thread here while we all figured that out.

I am talking about using drag/drop within file Explorer to copy data (Excel, Word, PDF, etc) files between PCs. I let Windows Update run independently on each machine.

I was only using those files as an example since this is something I do all the time. What the files are shouldn't make any difference.

    @nikki605

Have you actually tried doing what @Clintlgm suggests:
Function Discovery Provider Host Stops running

    Services
    Function Discovery Provider Host
    Function Discovery Resource Publication
Both or one not really sure seem to stop working after a period of time, requiring me to manually restart them
    - and even try stopping and restarting them?

I'm waiting for a time when I find I have sharing/networking problems again.. If this proves a suitable fudge, a script to do that could be useful- but that surely shouldn't be necessary.

Yes, I have. Infrequently, one PC or the other (random) will not see the other in File Explorer. It just happened this morning.

I tried restarting those services on both PCs but it did not help. I then rebooted both PCs, which just swapped which PC could not see the other. It seems to be random when both PCs are booted at the same time.

So this time, rather than using "Restart" I actually "Stopped" both services, waited a few seconds and then "Started" both services. I did this on both PCs. Now, each PC can see the other in File Explorer.

But now I am back to my original problem - I cannot copy a file using drag/drop to any of the folders listed under the networked PC. In the screen shot below, I tried to copy a file from my T490 laptop to the Desktop folder of the networked M83 desktop PC. I get the red NO symbol.

The folders I use for exchanging data I simply set up as shared. I use the same live id on both PCs - 1 Wifi, 1 ethernet.

I believe I have mine set up as described in the topic you linked, Option 2.

What do you mean by "live id?"

Both my PCs are ethernet connected to my router.
