PC wifi and Lan connectivity issues

(Windows version number: Windows 10 version 1809 (OS Build 17763.973))

So here's my setup. I have a router downstairs plugged into another computer (not mine), and my Pc is upstairs. I use a wifi extender that connects to the router wirelessly, and then I have an ethernet cable running from the extender to my pc in order to increase my speeds upstairs and whatnot. I can also connect to the wifi downstairs or the wifi on my extender, however it tends to be slower so I usually dont. (extender model: NETGEAR Wi-Fi Booster Range Extender EX3700 - Coverage Up-to 1000 sq ft and 15 Devices with AC750 Dual Band Wireless Signal Repeater (Up-to 750 Mbps) and Compact Wall Plug Design with UK Plug: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories )

I have been having some issues for the past few days where upstairs, my speeds have become significantly slower than usual. This includes connecting my pc to the wifi from the downstairs router, the wifi on the extender and the ethernet cable from my pc to the extender. The speeds start off at around what they should be on the speed test, but then significantly decrease from around 80mbps to about 1-2 mbps. When I move my pc downstairs and plug it into the router directly, I have no issues with speeds. I get around 200mbps directly from this. I think the speeds are also fine downstairs when I connect via wifi to the router when my pc is closer to it, as i ran tests multiple times, however I did come across a few times where they were slower than they were supposed to be. I do not think the issue is with the extender, as both connections to it from my pc seem fine when I move the extender downstairs, closer to the router.

I think the issue must be something to do with range, as everything seems to improve the closer I get to the router, however this setup has been fine for a while, and I dont know whats caused it to start dropping so recently.
Any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I am currently having to work with incredibly slow speeds upstairs, no matter which connection I choose.

    Thanks,
    Archie

Hi archsoul. Welcome to the TenForums @archsoul

You said the wifi direct to your PC is good, yes occasional bumps, but okay.

Then you said "I do not think the issue is with the extender, as both connections to it from my pc seem fine when I move the extender downstairs, closer to the router." which I do think points to extender or at least the extenders ability to receive Wi-fi.

When you are upstairs you said you could connect to wifi from router directly. Is that speed as it was before this all started to happen?

Try this tool to look at the wifi signal around you. Maybe someone else has just bought a power router which is on the same channel as you. This will mean you have to pick a new channel.

Could be a neighbor created their WiFi on the same channel as yours. Try switching WiFi channels. Doing a survey of WiFi channel use will help you determine the channels that have the least traffic on them:
Download NetSpot WiFi site survey & booster app - Windows

That's just the first app I found when searching, not necessarily the best.

    I shall clarify.
The speeds are fine when I connect my pc to the router by ethernet downstairs.
They are also fairly decent when i connect to the wifi when my pc is downstairs.
They are really slow when i connect to both the extender and my router wifi UPSTAIRS, which makes me wonder what is wrong.
    Hope that makes sense

    It does.

I would check channel interference. Seems I didn't actually post link to tool. Sorry.

    Inssider Free - Windows

    inSSIDer 3.1.2.1 Download - TechSpot

or use tool NavyLCDR posted. inSSIDer should also show you signal strength in the various locations.

Is you router fully exposed? How old is it?

Is it your router or ISP? I ask as they may have introduce new firmware.

Old routers also die, my Netgear R6300 on the 2.4 band, would only work in the same room. Any distance and it just couldn't make it.

Thanks for the link, I will try that.
I have used an app before which shows you the best channel for your router, and we then changed it to that one, and its only our router on there now so i dont think thats an issue.
Its fully exposed yeah, and quite new, the virgin media superhub 3 i think.
I'm pretty sure its something to do with my pc, as the wifi connection to my phone is great anywhere in the house, its just the pc where speeds are ridiculously slow. I am currently tethering the wifi connection from my phone to my pc via usb which works for now though.

Neighbours could have installed a new router since then, or changed their channel. Worth checking again.

Just to add to the list, I use Nirsoft's WiFiInfoView utility - small and requires no install.

I did actually recheck it today, the only devices on our channel are the router, the printer and the extender, and I know the problem isnt the printer.

Not sure how it could be your PC. Think you said when you are near router it works just fine.

So it should work just fine beside extender. There is always going to be some ping ponging.

Router sends to extender, extender sends to laptop, laptop responds to extender, extender responds to router.

What speed are you getting between laptop and extender?

If by laptop you mean my upstairs pc, then the connection between that is pretty much the same as the wifi speeds from router to pc upstairs. I used to get around 80mbps when connecting pc to extender, which was great, Im just stumped as to why the speeds of everything over wifi have changed so suddenly.
