    Results

TV2 here are the results from you suggestion...
Router and all systems turned off for several minutes.

Router turned on and allowed to fully boot.

MAIN (sys1) turned on. After fully booted only sys1 visible in Network.

LAPTOP (sys2) turned on. After fully booting sys2 visible on sys2. sys1 not visible on sys2. sys2 not visible on sys1. Waited several minutes still no sys2 on sys1 or sys1 on sys2.

SHOP (sys3) turned on. After fully booting, sys2 and sys3 visible on sys3. sys2 is not accessible from sys3 (double click on sys2 give error of no access to this device.

Back to sys1, all three systems visible on sys1, same access problem from sys1 to sys2. sys3 accessible from sys1.

    Sys2 and 3 visible from sys 2.

Short cut on sys2 shows sys1 drives and printer. Attempted to access printer by double clicking on icon gives error of no access to this device.

This brings up something I have been trying to find out - how does one grant access to a device, ie printer or computer. I have plenty of info about sharing files but nothing directly related to a printer or system. I have granted sharing access to the printer and checked it still a shared pinter.\

In my mind, to solve your problem - getting the printer to work on the laptop (and other machines) - you need to solve the networking setup. To know you have accomplished this you need to be able to see every computer in the Workgroup on every other computer on the local network.

Here are some things to check:

That every computer is on the same workgroup.
Start > Settings > System > right side > System Info

    Then, on every PC
    • Start > Windows System folder > Control Panel
    • Network & Sharing Center
    • On left: Change Advanced Settings
    • Under Private Network Settings > Turn ON Network Discovery > Turn ON Automatic Setup of Network Connected Devices > Turn ON File and Print Sharing
    • Under All Networks > Turn OFF Password Protected Sharing (Optional - but do this now to test) Note: In every Windows 10 Feature Update this setting will go back to default: OFF)

Check Printer Settings (Sounds like you did this)
On the MAIN sys1 computer connected by USB to the printer:
    • Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Select the printer > right click > Printer Properties
    • Sharing Tab > check: Share this printer > Give it an easy to recognize name

Now there is a "thing" with Windows systems unofficially known as "Master Browser Wars". This is when each PC thinks it needs to be the Master Browser for the network. Like teenagers, they spend more time bickering about who's the boss then getting anything done. This Master Browser issue can be the cause of a lot of local network problems.

The first thing you can try to clean up the network and see if it is a Windows network setting issue is to reset the network on every PC in a systematic way. A network reset performs a series of network cleanup tools easily.
    • Start > Settings > Network and Internet > down at the bottom > Network Reset > Reset Now > Restart

I have done this several times on my systems with no ill effects.

The next, and easiest thing you can do to end Master Browser Wars is to check and see if your router has a USB port on the back. If it does:
    • Get a blank USB Thumb drive, any size, Optional: Give it an easily recognized name.
    • Plug it into the back of the router.

You should now be able to see the USB drive (by it's name) on every connected computer.
This ends the war because it by default makes the router the Master Browser. You don't need to use the USB drive, just leave it there.
You may find that now every PC will see each other.

As a last resort, you can change a Windows setting.
This one is controversial because Windows disables this setting as a security precaution ever since the Wannacry exploit. However many people have done this without issue and have taken the chance.
You could do this as a test and set it back to default after testing.
    On every PC:
    • Control Panel > Programs and Features
    • On left: Turn Windows Features On or Off
    • Scroll down to SMB1.0 > expand
    • Uncheck: SMB1.0/CIFS Automatic Removal > Restart

    More Info:
Enable or Disable SMB1 File Sharing Protocol in Windows

    Hope that helps!

    Progess

    TV2,
    We are making some progress.

The sharing options, password protections and printer sharing are all set to the "proper" settings.

I changed the SMB settings at your suggestion.

I tried to inert a thumb drive into the router, but it never showed up on any my systems connected to the network.

I have not tried a network reset yet.

    Results:

The Desktop (sys1) where the printer is shows itself sys2 and sy4. My laptop (sys2) now shows all the computers on the network. My tablet (sys3) shows itself, sys2 and sys4, not sys1 desktop where the printer is. The shop (sys4) shows itself and my laptop (sys2).

Since the main goal is to access the printer from any where on the network we are far from that goal but getting closer.

Now when I tried to connect with the printer from my laptop (sys2) I get an "access denied" error. I also get this error trying to connect to my laptop from tablet. How do I set access to devices, not just folders or files. I have searched and found plenty on accessing files etc. but not devices. I get the same error when I try to access my User account on the desktop from my laptop.

    What Printer is this ?

Most can be setup as a Network printer via Wireless/Ethernet connection to your Router/WAP.

All your PCs/Laptops just connect via the Router/WAP to the printer. None of them need to be on other than the one you need to print from.
Much simpler than a USB connection to one PC.

    Hi gwandless.

I recommend doing the network Reset on all PCs. It is fast and easy. The longest wait is restarting the PC. It just starts all the Windows network logging over fresh.

The Access Denied message indicates to me that on sys1 the settings need to be checked and/or tweaked. That message indicates that permissions have not been granted for certain devices and/or files.
When I have run across this message I have corrected it by changing that setting in Network & Sharing Center to turn OFF password protected sharing. You don't normally need password protection on a local home network.

If after that, and the group resets, you continue to have this issue I would recommend starting a new post over in the Network and Sharing Forum. I'm a hardware guy. Networking is not my strong suit. There are people that are on that forum that know a lot more about networking issues than I do.
You can add a link to this conversation to your post so people can see what we've talked about and what you've done. It might bypass a lot of redundancy. Just right click on the Post # in the upper right corner of your first post and "Copy Link Location" and paste that into your Networking post.
Your problem is: "Can't access USB connected printer over local network".
Let us know here if you do that and I can monitor that thread and we can continue our conversation here.

My Win10 laptop can't see my Win10 desktop printer

    Hi Network gurus...
I have been working with TV2 on this problem for a couple of weeks. Here is the link to what has been going on.

    https://www.tenforums.com/drivers-ha...ml#post1817650

I have not been successful with any of the suggestions made so far, but I sounds like its a network issue.

Can anybody give me some more ideas to try??

Is there a possibility that it is the router? It is the one provided by my carrier, Verizon.

    Many thanks,
    Greg

    @gwandless

I saw where TV2 suggested you start a new thread in this, Networking, but that is going to make it more difficult for new posters here, having to flip back and forth to see what has already been said and done. 2 threads with the exact same title.

May I suggest you have an Admin, @Brink, move your previous thread here and tack on your first post. That way members aren't trying to reference 2 threads at once.

    Thanks as well!

    Thanks Brink!

A new piece of the pie,,,

At some point in time I was able to map a drive on the desktop (sys1) from the laptop (sys2). I am able to access that drive from sys2 even though sys1 does not show on the network from sys2.
