Network credentials for external drive on iMac

Hi, this is a weird one for me. I have a brand-new Dell XPS 15 7590 laptop with Windows 10 Pro version 1909 and I'm trying to set it up to access a Seagate Backup Plus drive connected via USB to an iMac running OS X Catalina 10.15.2. Interestingly, I can get to shares residing on the boot disk of the iMac just fine, but when I try to open the shared Seagate drive I get the Windows Security "Enter network credentials" pop-up with an "Access is denied." error. I have all the credentials entered for my iMac account on the PC and permissions for the account to the drive in question are set on the OS X side. I believe all parameters for file sharing are set correctly on both the PC and the Mac. I can't figure out why I would be able to access files and folders on the internal Mac drive but not on the external one. Any clues?

See this how to share with Mac OS. Share Mac files with Windows users - Apple Support. Network sharing with Mac OS is easier than with Windows. If you are connecting the Backup drive to the Windows machine via USB, Mac OS may be set to encrypt files on that drive. Work on one problem at a time. Get Windows to be able to log into the share on your iMac by using the iMac local user not iCloud account, then work on setting the iMac to share files from the backup drive to the Windows machine by following the info in the link I posted, which you need to understand this is a Mac OS situation in getting to know how to get around how to use the OS to its abilities.

Yes, I've done everything in the link. I'm not using an iCloud account, simply the local account with the same login ID and password as on the PC. As I said, I can see files on the PC that reside on the Mac's internal drive, but trying to access the Mac's external drive triggers the network credentials pop-up on the Windows machine.

It is easier to just share a folder on the Windows machine and from the iMac, move files and folders to the shared Windows folder.
