Cannot set up network sharing for specific users, only "everyone"
Hello everyone,
I'm trying to share files between two desktop PCs via wireless networking; they both connect to the Internet via a wireless router.
The two PCs are called SCH-Desktop1 and Roger-PC.
SCH-Desktop1 has 4 users (one user account being myself) whose folders I wish to share with another PC in our house.
Roger-PC has 2 users, one user account is also myself (same account name as on SCH-Desktop1, "Roger"). My account on both computers has the same password.
I've followed Shawn Brink's file sharing tutorial carefully and they're both members of the "mshome" workgroup, and the network is "private".
My issue is that when I try to share SCH-Desktop1 folders with Roger-PC I can only access the shared folders on SCH-Desktop1 if I share them with "everyone". Because of using "everyone" the three other users on SCH-Desktop1 can see one another's documents, which isn't desirable.
I've tried using "Roger" as the user to share with on SCH-Desktop1 (instead of "everyone") but without success. When I open the network folder on Roger-PC I could see the shares on SCH-Desktop1 but not open them to view the contents; when I attempted to open the shares the dialog box said "Windows cannot access \\SCH-Desktop1\<share name>" and "You do not have premission to access \\SCH-Desktop1\<share name>. Contact your network administrator to request access."
I should add that I have to include "everyone" in folder sharing and also advanced sharing for this particular folder, otherwise I can't access it from Roger-PC. (I thought using "advanced sharing" alone should be sufficient, but perhaps that's incorrect.)
Also, I was having the same problem when both PCs ran Windows 7 (before they were upgraded recently) so that's odd too, perhaps.
There's obviously something screwy going on with SCH-Desktop1's file sharing, but for the life of me, I can't figure out exactly what.
Any suggestions on how I can "persuade" SCH-Desktop1 to share with Roger-PC without using "everyone" as the user group to share with?
Thanks in advance,
Roger V.
