Cannot set up network sharing for specific users, only "everyone"

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to share files between two desktop PCs via wireless networking; they both connect to the Internet via a wireless router.
The two PCs are called SCH-Desktop1 and Roger-PC.

SCH-Desktop1 has 4 users (one user account being myself) whose folders I wish to share with another PC in our house.

Roger-PC has 2 users, one user account is also myself (same account name as on SCH-Desktop1, "Roger"). My account on both computers has the same password.
I've followed Shawn Brink's file sharing tutorial carefully and they're both members of the "mshome" workgroup, and the network is "private".
My issue is that when I try to share SCH-Desktop1 folders with Roger-PC I can only access the shared folders on SCH-Desktop1 if I share them with "everyone". Because of using "everyone" the three other users on SCH-Desktop1 can see one another's documents, which isn't desirable.
I've tried using "Roger" as the user to share with on SCH-Desktop1 (instead of "everyone") but without success. When I open the network folder on Roger-PC I could see the shares on SCH-Desktop1 but not open them to view the contents; when I attempted to open the shares the dialog box said "Windows cannot access \\SCH-Desktop1\<share name>" and "You do not have premission to access \\SCH-Desktop1\<share name>. Contact your network administrator to request access."

I should add that I have to include "everyone" in folder sharing and also advanced sharing for this particular folder, otherwise I can't access it from Roger-PC. (I thought using "advanced sharing" alone should be sufficient, but perhaps that's incorrect.)

Also, I was having the same problem when both PCs ran Windows 7 (before they were upgraded recently) so that's odd too, perhaps.

There's obviously something screwy going on with SCH-Desktop1's file sharing, but for the life of me, I can't figure out exactly what.

Any suggestions on how I can "persuade" SCH-Desktop1 to share with Roger-PC without using "everyone" as the user group to share with?
    Thanks in advance,
    Roger V.

    Version info:
    Roger-PC : Windows 10 Pro 32 bit ver 1909 build 18363.535 (upgraded from Win7 Pro recently)
    SCH-Desktop1 : Windows 10 Home 64 bit ver 1909 build 18363.535 (also upgraded from Win7 Home recently)

If you are trying to access folders in the users profile that's your problem even if your on the PC as another user you can't access another users profile folders like their desktop as they have special set of permission. Share a folder outside user profile

    Hi Samuria,
    Thanks for your reply.
Sorry that this is a bit long....
I have been inspired to do some further testing this morning, in a spirit of curiosity, hoping to learn something.

We have a Dell Inspiron laptop on our network which has 2 users, my wife and myself. My login is the same as on the other two computers mentioned in the last post, and it's running Windows 10 Home 64 bit version 1903 build 18362.535.

On this laptop I've done a very similar thing to what I have been trying to do with sch-desktop1 (as mentioned in my original post); in this case I've shared the c:\users folder with "Roger" (not "everyone") using advanced sharing, giving "roger" read and change permissions. I can access everything in that folder from my other computer (roger-pc) without any problems.

As an experiment, after reading your advice, on this laptop (NV-Laptop2) I removed the permissions for "roger" from the sharing on "users", and of course I was unable to look inside it from roger-pc (Windows displayed the message "Windows cannot access \\NV-Laptop2\Users" and "You do not have permission to access \\NV-Laptop2\Users. Contact your network administrator to request access.")

I then set up advanced sharing on \\NV-Laptop2\Users\<user-name>\documents once more giving "roger" read and change permissions (and removing "everyone" which Windows put there as a default. This worked; I can read and change files inside \\NV-Laptop2\Users\<user-name>\documents from "roger-pc" via the sharing.

You specifically mentioned "you can't access another users profile folders like their desktop" so I tried sharing this too, same as the above example, not expecting it to work, but to my surprise, it did. I can create files in \\NV-Laptop2\Users\<user-name>\desktop, and edit them, from "roger-pc".

Long story short, all that I thought I should be able to do with computer sch-desktop1 I can easily do with nv-laptop2 (admittedly with different hardware, and somewhat different windows version, etc), so I'm still at a loss to explain why the older pc (sch-desktop1) behaves as it does.

    Thanks for your help,
    Roger V.

Ok, I give in. Gotta be "everyone".
But I applied careful "read deny" security on the kids accounts so they couldn't read the parent's folders, or each other's folders. (Was very, VERY careful not to deny either admin account read access to anything. That would be awkward... )
Thanks Samuria for inspiring me to look more deeply into the matter.
    Roger V.

(Never did find out why the laptop behaved differently compared to sch-desktop1, but I suspect that there is a bug (or a feature!) hidden in roger-PC which causes the puzzling difference. Or I'm just losing my marbles! )
