You can't manually update your NETGEAR cable modem routers firmware

Wasn't sure if this belonged in Network and Sharing or Drivers and Hardware so General it is. I have been wondering about this for a long time. Why don't they want you doing this on your own. We can screw up software/ hardware in so many different ways what's the problem with allowing one more : )

What is the latest firmware version of my NETGEAR cable modem or modem router? | Answer | NETGEAR Support

In all fairness I belong to the cult if it ain't broke don't fix it but my firmware is sitting at V2.01.26 while the Cox Cox (Approved Firmware) is at V3.01.09. It's such a PIA to screw around with them on the phone. Still sitting at winver 1709 so maybe I should in fact leave well enough alone.

It's obsolete. Why not upgrade to 1909?

Our local cable company, Bresnan/Charter/Spectrum, doesn't want customers messing with their cable modem if paying the $5 monthly and generally won't give much support for the modems purchased at the stores such as Wal*Mart and BestBuy. They also want their customers to have up-to-date Operating Systems, according to this chart Version 1803 is done and Version 1809 will be done in May:
