    What a difference fibre makes!

I live in an urban area with dense housing. The estate is huge with thousands of properties, and starting a few months ago, we had Virgin Fibre installed in all the streets.
Last Friday, the fibre was extended to the house and a fitter installed the rest inside. I opted for tv, phone and broadband, and the cost was free supply and fitting and less than half the monthly outlay that Sky was charging.
The biggest difference is the broadband speed. I have just downloaded an ISO of W10 64 and it took under three minutes for just under 5 Gb. That is THIRTY times as fast as my old connection!

@tinmar49, Isn't technology great when it's reasonably priced, accessible, and actually works?

I still remember when I had a 300 baud MODEM!

Technology usually works OK provided WE control it rather than IT controls you.

I HATE mobile phones left on the table in restaurants with the cutlery -- a few years ago this was the height of bad manners -- now its often a matter of course.

If I go out with people to dinner these days --we have a Rule -- NO mobiles visible on the table while we are eating --if emergency call e/g someone is on a callout gig then answer the phone AWAY FROM THE TABLE -- ring tones can be set to vibrate so we don't even get to hear the call.

I'd love new years resolution --lets all have ONE mobile phone free day a week --or if that's just too much try ONE A MONTH.

Happy New year everyone -- and hopefully less "mobile - ing" and "Twittering" -- get back to real physical communications again !"!

    Cheers

@jimbo, is it just me or does it seem ironic that we are discussing getting back to real physical communication via a web forum?

    Sorry, couldn't resist

Happy New Year's to you all! It's 12 hours away for me from where I am.

So, I mentioned that New Year's is 12 hours away for me. Check out the details of this flight from Japan. They left Japan in 2020, will arrive in the United States in 2019, and will be able to celebrate New Year's again 7 hours after they arrive here.

And there I was thinking of porridge, bran flakes and wholemeal bread.

Hope you took advantage of the initial discounts you can get via cashback sites and so on when changing supplier. How's the upload speed?

This area of the town was built in 1938, with a gap between me and the next house because the war stopped house building. A good number of years ago they ripped up the pavement slabs (sidewalk if you're in American) outside and replaced them with tarmac. A few months later they dug a trench through all that tarmac to lay optical fibre, primarily then for cable TV.

Yes, they must have planned that.

So I have potential access to full fibre, but still my 38Mbit/s internet comes along a phone cable from a wooden pole diagonally across the road.

Of course, in new estates there are no poles or cables like that. And I recall the days before there was even a phone connection to the house... and my grandparents had a 'party line' - shared with nextdoor neighbours.

One day...when I'm not tied to my ISP's email..

I had dial up until 2007, and despite buying a 56K modem, could only manage 1/3 of that speed.

1 1/4 hours until Big Ben chimes for us LIMEYS, happy new year to all, over and out.
