Shared home computers see each other 'sometimes' yes, no?

    1 Win7 & 3 Win10 Pro 1909

I've shared everything imaginable on all the machines.

Yesterday my P50 could see Connie's ThinkConnie and no more. This morning the P50 sees the T61. Rarely will the P50 see the previous + Connie's Dell. The reverse is true.

If all machines were not sharing then none should see anyone ever?

I thought of using the Win 10 network troubleshooter for a specific machine but I'm not sure I've got the syntax correct. When the troubleshooter asks for the network machine I tried using the other machine's 'Name'. For example, from my P50 I type: \\MARKT61\ which sort of helped. The system returned a variety of logs but when I clicked a link (not expecting to understand the lingo) no text appeared just a tiny box as if the content was an image.

As I'm writing this, I 'think' all the machines are in the workgroup WORKGROUP. I'll check that later today.

Any ideas on what I'm missing?

Power off all machines and your router. Then power on router and wait for it to settle. Then power on machines.

On each machine check these settings, in particular SMB1 and on Windows 10 the Networks services.

Share Files and Folders Over a Network in Windows 10

Also disable homegroups in Win 7 if running, that is not part of Win 10.

I just had time to review your reply (and thanks again).

I'm unsure about the link to Brink's 'How to'.

There are 9 options. Why? Do you following the instructions for option 1 and if it doesn't work option 2 and so on...?

Or is there a clue which option is appropriate for your setup or just do option 1 since it's option 1?

Also, Shaun says at the tutorial outset the instructions are only for Win 10 machines. I have one Win 7. Do I follow a similar tutorial that's likely on the 7 forum for that machine? Or since MS' sharing changes have been recent and only for the 10 OS, I'd leave the 7 machine as is?

    Sorry if I'm being thick.

    No just do option 1.

Yes just walk through Option 1 in Win 7. If not applicable. like a service name, just skip.

I also found that once I had everything setup I had to do a Network Reset on my Win 10 machines.

Start > Settings > Network and Internet > Scroll down right hand side > Network Reset.

You will have to re-enter wireless passwords and VPN software may need to be setup again.

Have 4 PCs on my network all running Windows 10-64 Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.535) (3 home and one Windows Pro)

Why can't/won't Microsoft solve this problem in Windows 10? I had my small Home LAN working with a work around (I gave up on the Windows Network page in file explorer and created a new folder on my desktop and added a shortcut to each PC using \\computer'sname as the shortcut address). The work around was working until my laptop's Windows 10 got so corrupted that it was becoming unusable and I had to breakdown and do a complete OS reinstall (tried the in-place reinstall first, but it didn't solve the problem). After the fresh new Windows OS was up and running on the Laptop it's access was hit and miss from any other PC on the network (even with my work around).

So after a couple hours of fighting with it I gave up and clicked the Network reset link in Windows Settings, Network and Internet, Status (on all 4 PCs). After doing that all of a sudden all PCs suddenly appeared in the Windows Network Page in file explorer. That seems to work until I reboot the Laptop (and at least one other PC running the Home version of Windows, as far as I can tell the PC with the Pro OS is is immune to this problem) and they disappear again and the Laptop's access is intermittent. Do the reset trick again on each PC that disappeared and the PCs magically reappear again.

I'm guessing that the reset link runs the old netcfg -d reset command (which was a work around I used to use when Homegroup still sorta worked). Unless someone has a guaranteed fix to the mess I'd be willing to add a shortcut on my desktop that would run the appropriate command line and restart or shutdown the PC that I could use when the PC needs rebooted or shut down (If anyone is good at writing bat files and knows what needs included if the could post it here that would be great).

I've seen similar issues and was searching and reading on the internet looking for something that works. I came across this article.

I have not tried it but offer it up as some reading. It is from Feb 2019 so not ancient, ancient history.

The thing that concerns me about that post is that Microsoft killed Network "Neighbourhood" with the 1803 update. Does everything he proposes doing still work?

Well the article was written well after the launch of 1803.

Not sure they killed Network Neighbourhood, they kill "Home Group".

Oops, Actually Network Neighborhood is a Windows 7 term and it isn't used in Windows 10 (that's what Home Group was supposed to replace). Should we assume that the author is using the "Neighbourhood" term to describe the Win 10 File manager Network page?
