How To Set Up My Own VPN Server with Certificate Authentication? Win10

I want to be able to remote into my home computer but don't want to shell out the $$$ for a VPN service. So I want to set up my own VPN server using the latest version of Windows 10 Pro.

I want certificate-based authentication so it's not just a password securing it from the internet, and instead my own self made certificates.

Is this possible and if so how?

Setup is quite easy depending on your router and setup while IPsec VPN authentication via user certificate are good enough to work for some cases only. I tired the same for Disney+ but failed to get it working and for alike cases i fear you need to shell out the $$$

I set up a old router....it wasn't super hard but I got bored with it.

I need to do some homework on newer routers that have VPN capability built in. Seems like a no brainer...

+1 for router with VPN server built in. And you will also need a DDNS host which any router with a VPN server will also support.

Sorry for the late response, been out of commission the last couple days but the last stint I had into this endeavor was on Sunday. So to clarify a bit with my current goals, I want to use a VPN to directly connect to my router so I can remote into devices on my home network.

The router my computer is connected to is a Netgear WNDR4000, and it didn't have the functions I needed to my knowledge. There's also 3 routers in my home network run in sequence, all on different "networks", the first being the modem/router (an Xfinity XB3) and the router my computer is connected to is the last in the line. None of which have a convenient VPN option. My friends router literally has a button you can press to download the proper config files to connect directly to his router and I WISH it was that simple. T.T

So to get out of what I believe was a triple NAT for my computer I went through and got all the routers on the same network and I flashed the Netgear router with the latest dd-wrt firmware so I can use it as a VPN server and generate and use certificates using OpenVPN.

So the step I'm currently is what to the with the certificates that I "believe" I generated correctly, as well as how to setup the client.ovpn file. THEN I still need to know what options to use in the router itself, I'm assuming it's the :OpenVPN Server/Deamon" option and there are fields to input information, but idk which keys/certificates/info goes where in the router nor do I know which ports I need to forward on what routers.
