    VPN keeps disconnecting WIFI

I have an odd issue when using a VPN on my windows 10 laptop I find now and then that the VPN just disconnects the WIFI.

By that I mean that there is no wifi connectivity on the laptop.
If I stop the VPN service (Nord or Cyberghost) the WIFI starts to work without fail.
I have recently also rebuilt my laptop and am using v1909 but this happened with my last windows version of 1803 too

    any ideas?

I'm not surprised. I think this is how many VPN software products work, shutting off the non-secure access to TCPIP (either WiFi or wired access to the internet).

I used to use the Nortel VPN client as part of the enabling of my access to customer IBM mainframe computers for TSO and 3270 (via 3270 emulation software products). Whenever I activated the VPN client I also lost access to the internet for my POP3 Email Client (which required a secure connection and signin to the POP/SMTP servers). So I had to live with no email on my desktop/laptop as long as I was connected to the customer mainframe for 3270.

Once I completed my mainframe session and stopped the VPN client, normal internet access returned.

I'm not sure all VPN clients have this effect, but certainly some do (I believe Big-IP also works this way, same as Nortel).

If you are trying to use both Ethernet snd Wifi, the connection that is not active with the VPN will be disconnected.

Nord VPN stopped supporting L2TP/IPsec and PPTP protocols on December 1st, 2018. These protocols are commonly used on many routers including Netgear according to their website. Perhaps other VPN services have made similar changes as Nord and explains why your wifi stopped working with both Nord and Cyberghost.

Nord VPN does provide directions to flash some routers, including Netgear but that's your gamble if you brick your router. All the necessary router configuration info is on the links I posted earlier and this link to flash a Netgear router. Check your router to see if it is compatible or not.

This is an excerpt from the ipvanish website. Please read carefully.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Certain beta builds may not work with OpenVPN. Please read the feedback in the build forum before installing a beta build. Also note, regardless of what model router you have or version of DD-WRT you are installing, there is a chance of bricking your router (i.e. rendering the router completely useless) if the process of putting DD-WRT on the router does not complete properly. Please thoroughly read and follow the related documentation regarding the updating procedure for your router, to minimize the risk of bricking your router.

OpenVPN has become the latest protocol for VPN providers.
