Since upgrading to 1909, I can no longer copy to shared folders

Since upgrading from 1809 to 1909, I can no longer copy to shared folders on Win 10 PCs on my home network. I get a red circle with a slash.

But bizarrely I CAN copy to subfolders under the shared folder.

I first had this problem with 1903 and rolled back to 1809 which made sharing work again.

I was hoping MS fixed this in 1909, but no.

Both PC and laptop have Win 10 Pro, 1909. This is a Windows peer to peer home network.

The problem was definitely introduced with 1909 / 1903. Is there a solution?

Upgrading Windows like this can possibly update your hardware network drivers. This in turn might change Windows networking settings and homegroup settings.

Try creating another account and see if the problem is still there

    Good luck

What people don't realise is you have network set up and user has rights but it doesn't use names it uses sids so the update hasn't broken it what has happened is it's in effect a new PC and the sid isn't the same hence the problem even if username is the same the sid isn't so you need to redo permission for new user

Still Broken with Windows 10 2004 May 2020 Update

Thanks everyone, for your suggestions. Since I had reverted to 1809, I waited for the May 2020 Update to see if my problem would solve itself, but no luck.

Thank you Samuria for your tip about SIDs. It was an opportunity to educate myself about them.
I figured out how to test your theory:
what has happened is it's in effect a new PC and the sid isn't the same
    I typed
    Code:
    whoami /user
into a command prompt window to get my SID. Next, I did the "upgrade" to the May 2020 Update, then I repeated the above, and verified the SIDs are identical.

Another test: I used a non-administrator command prompt and the "copy" command to copy a file to the network share and it works. Yet if I try to do the same thing with drag and drop, I still get the infuriating red circle with the slash.

If I double click the offending share, I can drag a file into the resulting directory listing, but this is a lame workaround compared to the ease of drag and drop.

I changed the number of rollback days to revert to 1809 from MS's paltry 10 days to 60 days. So this time I have time to hopefully solve this drag and drop problem.

Pluginz: I tried creating another user account -- Same problem.

I may erase the laptop (after imaging it) and re-install everything from scratch, a last resort as it will take a lot of time.

    Suggestions? Comments?

I have two 1909 machines. One was a clean install and the other an upgrade from Windows 7. I've not encountered the same problem so I don't have any suggestions to cure it. However, I am curious as to what would happen if you were to create a new folder on the Desktop of your Laptop, share the folder and grant read/write permissions to everyone.

There would be no subfolders so it would be interesting to see if you could drag and drop files to this empty folder.

JackHughs: Thanks. I tried your suggestion, but what shows up as shared is the entire "Users" folder even though the share is at \\Computername\Users\MyUsername\Destop\Empty Shared Folder.

But then I created a folder at the top level of the C: drive, shared it with Everyone and... same problem: I can't drag and drop onto the icon of the share. But if I double click that share, I can of course drag anything I want into it.

1809 reaches end of support this year, so keeping it to keep file sharing working properly is not a viable option. So I erased the laptop yesterday, did a clean install of 1909 and... Same problem.

Maybe I'm just going to have to share the entire computer as an ugly workaround. Then by definition anything I want to drag and drop into will be a sub-folder and so will work. I really would prefer to share on a folder by folder basis though, with some semblance of security and privacy.

Drag and drop worked as expected on every Win 10 through 1809, and hasn't for me on any release after 1809.

I'm stumped. Maybe this is some creepy way to get people to use a Microsoft Account instead of a Local Account?

    Perhaps I misunderstood your question.
I still have an XP machine connected to my LAN. In XP, the LAN is described as "My Network Places" and Windows Explorer (under Network) shows all of the individual shared folders on the connected computers.

In this environment, one can drag and drop directly to the connected shared folders.

My Windows 10 machines do not support "My Network Places." All I see under "Network" are connected computer names. It's necessary to double-click a computer name to access the shared folders on that machine.

Yes, we are on the same page.
I double click the computer name, and that computer's list of shared folders is what I'm talking about.

When I try to drag anything into the shared folder, this is an example of what I see:
Since upgrading to 1909, I can no longer copy to shared folders-test_cr.jpg

Note the red circle with the slash, preventing drag and drop into the shared folder. This worked fine for me, as it no doubt does for you, until I upgraded Windows to 1909, as I have mentioned above in the thread.

I can double-click a shared folder to open it up and then drag things into the resulting directory. I can also copy things into the folder from a non-administrator command prompt, etc., as I said above.

To someone who does not have this problem, it must seem bizarre. It seems bizarre to me.

Seems bizarre to me to, so I tested and confirmed it. As it turns out you don't even need two machines to demonstrate this, a share on the same machine will show the same effect.

What you are trying to do is drag-and-drop a file onto a link pointing to the share, if you open the link and go to the share everything works as normal. In 1809 you can drop a file onto the link, in 1909 you cannot.

There is however one correction I can make to your diagnosis, I have tested and found that this change in behaviour started with 1903, not 1909.

    1809:
Since upgrading to 1909, I can no longer copy to shared folders-image.png

    Bree: Thanks for the validation.

Googling is hard because how do you describe the issue to Google? But I have now found a couple of threads on the web also confirming this exact issue:

from Reddit: "Drag and Drop to desktop shortcut icon no longer works after 1903 update":
Drag and Drop to desktop shortcut icon no longer works after 1903 update : Windows10

from Microsoft Community: "Drag and Drop to Network Folder Icon Not Working Since 1903 Update":
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...9-339d178174b0

Spoiler Alert: The threads are worth reading, but there are no solutions given, only ugly workarounds. People are mystified that Microsoft would change such a basic Windows behavior without comment -- Is it a bug or by design? Who knows.

There was one suggestion that maybe they changed some undocumented key in the Registry. I am attempting to follow up on that but I'm way out of my depth on that one.

    - - - Updated - - -

I foolishly attempted to see what MS changed in the registry between 1809 and 1903 that could have caused this networking behavior change. (If it even has anything to do with the registry.)

I created two clean VMs, one with a fresh 1809, one with 1903, then used Nirsoft's RegistryChangesView to compare what had changed between these two versions of Windows.

Microsoft made 139,762 changes to the registry in 1903! Many keys have new values, some are new keys, some keys were removed.

It found 3,935 changes when I filtered for the word "network".

This tells me three things: 1. These releases of Windows MS is doing twice a year are MAJOR changes to windows. 2. The registry changes are beyond my capabilities to figure out. 3. The ugly workarounds for this issue are looking more and more appealing.

Bree: It is amazing that you found it doesn't even work any more on one's own PC! My PC shows the same results you got.
