After re-sharing everything and creating 100% matching user accounts, trying both the host and guest PC names as the Domain for the login username, and still not being able to access the shares, I finally tried the IP address of the host rather than the computer name to access the share, e.g. \\192.168.1.1\sharename
Worked fine!
Oddly if I Remote Desktop to the host I can connect using the computer name.
Not sure why the computer name isn't resolving on my network shares, but I can live with this. My host is a 'server' upstairs with a fixed IP. I can imagine for others it's a massive problem though, if they prefer to use DHCP to assign flexible IPs and it's not an always-on machine. It'll be problematic for me if I ever switch to a different subnet with a different IP, as I'll need to re-point all my share links, but I can deal with that when it happens.
Perhaps by then I'll have figured out how to access my Homegroup.... that hasn't worked since Windows 7. They might be able to make their OS nice and neat but Microsoft's approach to networking seems a little unreliable and complicated when it breaks....
