Wifi extenders - 2.4 and 5Ghz - huge speed difference

    Hi folks

just of note to anybody playing around with Wifi extenders and bog standard wifi cards in laptops

Connecting by wifi to 2.4 GHZ band on the extender -- was only able to get laptop up to around 30 Mbps -- on the 5 GHZ it was up to 205 Mbps.

Huge difference on bog standard laptop with older wifi card built into it (5GHZ capable though) connected to a wifi extender -- note the wifi extender was dual band and the router had also both 2.4 and 5GHZ enabled.

If you go for these extenders get a dual band version one and also see if it does the wifi Tx in full duplex mode as well.
There's a lot of people out there who *Could* be using 5GHZ but haven't got around to it yet -- certainly worth while if you are anywhere a distance from your home router

BTW using a switch (cheap / unmanaged) with a USB->lan adapter gives far quicker results too with a decent wifi extender such as Nighthawk types. If you use the unmanaged switch then enable DHCP in the router.

Advantage of the switch and LAN to the wifi extender is that for the wifi part even a 2.4GHZ only device can make use of the faster speed with the switch and 5GHZ band . However just using purely wifi with an extender 5GHZ is clearly much the better option --especially as extenders usually slow down speeds anyway.

    Cheers

The 2.4ghz (100 mb/s) internet speed is what i'm using and enough. So far 5.5 mb/s my best files download speed.

2.4 is only 54mbps burst per channel, depending on. Channel Bandwidth, same with 5ghz. 5ghz is per channel a max burst of 286mbps.

I.m using optical fibre internet, and I get 60 mb/s (max 100mb/s) with
internet speed test and my router is dual channel. BTW I signed up for 100 mb/s plan.

Only problem is that a 2.4ghz only capable device is not going to get faster speeds with an A/P that is also capable of 5ghz. It does not work that way. The same goes for using a cheap switch and/or USB to Ethernet. It does not work that way.

Getting link speed from router on the extender of 702 Mbs

Here's connection status -- 702 Mbs which is perfectly good for my usage from a "Garden shed / Office" about 100 metres from main router

you obviously hadn't either READ or UNDERSTOOD my post -- the whole point was by using LAN cable to switch (or LAN direct to the extender) then the wifi is managed by the extender so it CAN use the 5 GHZ band -- this way with say a 2.4ghz only device with no internal ethernet card you can use a USB>LAN connector -- USB speed capability at several Gib/s is more than sufficient for decent USB-->Lan speeds.

You can't really think I'm that much of a dummy who thinks a 2.4GHZ only device can itself mysteriously work on 5 GHZ. This is a method to get such a device able to use the facilities of another device which IS 5GHZ capable. And BTW using a decent cheapish switch does work better than a load of individual Lan cables -- you do need DHCP enabled on the main router though

    Cheers
