    Windows Defender - NAS Files

I hope this is going into the best category here.

    Using Windows 10.

I have a Synology NAS. I download everything to it. So, I don't really want to disable Windows Defender (though I am open to switching to a different product, if there's one that handles this better). But, something's gotta give. It's locking up my file manager and even notepad for some weird reason when large archives are being uncompressed (via JDownloader 2).

I see that network usage is high. Though it is not always 100, it is sometimes, according to Task Manager. I even bought a 10GbE adapter (Thunderbolt 3 to 10Gbe) and card to run to my NAS. I did not realize at the time the problem was on the "Internet" side of things. Not that it was a waste. I am happy to have that anyway. But, I am not keen to go out and buy a new (and expensive) router as well as a switch to run 10GbE for both Internet and NAS. So, my question is... What should I do? Are there any tweaks that would both be recommended and functional as far as solving the problem? Or, is there a different anti-virus app I should change to? I very much appreciate your input. Thanks in advance.

I have 2 WDC 2TB HDDs attached to my 4-port Wireless Router which is a 10/100/1000 or Gigabit device. The drives don't seem much slower than a USB 2 drive but a USB 3 drive transfer is faster. Nice part of the NAS is I can Map the Public Folder on either of them from any computer attached to the Router or using Wireless/Wi-Fi. The Internet is not involved, still have Network access even when the Internet is down. I actually have 5 computers [4 using a KVM], 2 NAS drives and 2 Printers plus a workbench connected to the Router but did have to add an 8-port Gigabit Switch to accomplish it. At any one time I'll have 2 Notebooks connected wirelessly plus wife's Notebook.

Thank you for the reply. Do you use Windows Defender (just to be sure...I assume so). Do you map your shares to actual drive letters? Did you turn off any options in Windows Defender?

Synology has their own scanning software based on Clam AV that they run on their NAS boxes. Windows Defender has zero effect on the files stored on the NAS, vice versa. Now if you are moving files to a Windows system from the NAS, yes, WD will scan those files when opened.

The only 10gbe NAS that Synology makes are Enterprise Grade and a few of the SOHO boxes.

Apologies for not explaining better. Might have given a better picture. Yes, the files are being accessed on the Windows PC via a mapped drive letter, just as if it were a directly attached drive. In this case, the file is being downloaded and then extracted (very large file). The extracting is being done automatically via the software on the Windows PC. I am aware that you can extract directly on the NAS, and that would no doubt prevent this and give better performance. But, it won't work with the setup I have going.

I was out to a meeting but Yes, I use WD. I do Map the Public Folder on each of the 2 drives to a specific letter [have to], Z: and Y:. No, I use WD oob, seems to work quite well.

NP. Thanks again for replying. Frustrating it is. I don't seem to have trouble when downloading or playing audio or video files or most any file, but when I extract large archives, that's when I have the problems with WD. The archives in question are quite large.

I added an exclusion for ZIP and RAR. Will see if that makes any difference.

How big is "quite large"? I seldom have a problem up to around 10GB, maybe a bit larger if not doing anything else but the longer the transfer goes on they do slow down. Part of the issue is the quality of the files and the Copy or Move has to do reindexing especially after skipping a bad file.

The last one I did where I had the problem was 33.7 GB. Another one done today was 45.6 GB. The biggest one from today was 63.7 GB. I honestly don't remember if it happened on smaller ones that were in the 8 GB range. I am pretty sure it does not occur on files in the 1 GB range.

That is pretty much my experience when I do backups of clients' data before working on their computer, which is why I need such capacity. It's sometimes amazing what people save, I even have a working MS-DOS 6.22 with Windows 3.1 and both 3.5" and 5.25" floppy drives and a USB Zip drive for the occasions when someone finds a disk in a drawer and want to know what is on it.
