Unable to authenticate to access win10 files

    Hello Everyone,

I have been struggling to access my windows 10 files from my iphone/ipad/android, while my PC is on the same network, I tried to use different file explorer apps such as FE File Explorer (FE File Explorer: File Manager on the App Store) to access the win10 but fails to authtenticate..

I am able to discover the PC on the app, then it asks me for credentials, i tried all the different formats below but none of them work, can anyone please advise?

    username: PC_Name\Email
    password: EmailPW

    username: Email
    Password: EmailPW

    username: Email
    Password: Win10PIN

    username: PC_Name\Email
    Password: Win10PIN

    My Win10 spec:
    Windows 10 Pro
    Version 10.0.18362 Build 18362

    Thanks in advance!

    Regards
    Jeffrey

    Welcome to Ten Forums, Jeffrey.

You have been trying with a wrong username. The Microsoft account email address is not your Windows username.

When creating a Windows user account with an email address, system creates a five character acronym of the email address name, and uses that acronym as your user profile name.

An example. User John Doe sets up a new Windows 10 PC with his Microsoft account email [email protected]. His user profile would be named as johnd, and for network authentication he would need to enter the username as \\PC-Name\johnd. The password of the user profile is then the same as the email password.

He signs in to his PC with his email address, but in all other aspects including networking, his username to that PC is the user profile name.

You can check what your user profile name is simply by opening C:\Users folder in File Explorer, and checking what is the name of your user profile folder. That is the username you should use in networking to access your PC.

Thank you for your warm welcome Kari!

Your suggestion doesn't work with my microsoft email account, I found the username in c:\users but it still says incorrect credentials... I created a local account on the PC and it works.. this is a bit strange.. but the local account can be a workaround..

    Appreciate your help!
