    Local IP returned instead of remote VPN's IP


    Hi for several years both in win7 and now win10 I have a VPN to a remote Draytek router in the UK.
    All worked very well. BUT:
    Between July this year and now (Oct) something has changed and exceeds my expertise to correct.
    I can set things to either:
    (a) connect to sites normally while running the VPN but then "whatsmyip" returns the local IP address instead of the remote IP address!!! (But yes if I do an ipconfig /all I see that my VPN NIC has been assigned a remote IP)
    (b) connect to the VPN and then discover that the DNS has gone AWOL and so I cannot connect to any sites. However the IP address returned by "whatsmyip" (after several attempts) is indeed the remote IP
    I have Edge, Chrome and Firefox as browsers in the hope that one of them might work but none do.
    One recommendation was to stop location tracking (in Firefox) but that changed nothing.

    I also note that the gateway is 0.0.0.0 but maybe that was always the case.
    What I've read on the web
    concerning DNS suffixes etc
    seems very very techie indeed.
    I've tinkered but got nowhere.

    I am really not sure where to look for a resolution to this - I have tried commercial VPNs (free ones) and the experience is the same.

    If anyone has had similar experience or more knowledge I'd be really glad for some guidance.

    You say the local ip is displayed is that an internet ip or local as 192.168 ip? 0.0.0.0 is the internet and can be a gateway

    No I meant that the public IP returned was for where I am now instead of the UK ISP - However I'd just like to say that I stumbled into a solution. When I went with Chrome I got an error msg DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG
    I plugged that into the search engine and got a hit suggesting entering manually the following DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 - up until then I'd been entering manual DNS addresses (either BT or others that I've used in the past) and nothing worked - this combination worked! There we are, less complex than I thought it would be - I only lost all morning and most of the afternoon! Thanks

    Those are Google public DNS addresses. Google already tracks enough of my data, I don't need them recording every network address I access.

    I prefer Open DNS: Enter 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 in the DNS server fields.

    Now I've made the change I am back to the same situation. Here's the result from Firefox:-

    Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site.
    We can’t connect to the server at duckduckgo.com.
    If that address is correct, here are three other things you can try:
    Try again later.
    Check your network connection.
    If you are connected but behind a firewall, check that Firefox has permission to access the Web.
