Windows 10 update has killed my Mac Network

Hi,

Last night my windows machine did the most recent windows update and now I can no longer connect to my desktop from my macbook. I use my macbook for work so transferring files is essential. What's weird is that I can connect to my macbook from my desktop so I assume permissions must have changed in windows. I've double checked and everything is ok so somewhere on my desktop it's now stopping my mac from connecting.

Anyone else experiencing this issue, any suggestions?

What's worse is that I can't revert the windows update as I don't have system restore or any back up in place.

Please help

I suspect the windows update you talk about may have been the Feature Update to Windows 10 version 1903 as a feature update will delete all previous restore points. Look in your Update history to confirm that, if so you should see an entry like this...

You have 10 days after a feature update in which you can go back to your previous version of Windows.

Go Back to the Previous Version of Windows in Windows 10

A feature update may reset some settings back to their to defaults. I don't have a Mac, but if you needed the SMB1 Server enabled in W10 for the Mac to connect that may have been turned off in Windows Features by the update.

SMBv1 is disabled in Mac OS. Only SMBv2 & v3 can be used. Most likely we are looking at a Master Browser problem and/or Firewall/Security Permissions on the Windows machine. This is why Cloud Storage is becoming the norm. Since they are using a Macbook, iCloud would be the best way to go to store files that may be accessed by different machines, regardless if they are on the network systems or not. I exclusively use Cloud Storage with iCloud and OneDrive, since I am using any one of the computing devices I own at any given time, with my iPad Pro being the main device I am using, the Windows Desktop second.

I mainly use my Macbook Air with Catalina 10.15 to access the shares for the NVIDIA Shield. It is a lot easier with it than trying with Windows. I have not tweaked anything on the Windows Desktop and have not had issues with Networking, so that leads me to believe that there are other things afoot with why so many are having problems with their shares.

I just tried it with my Macbook. File Sharing was not checked in System and went into Finder > Go > Connect to Server (smb://ip of the windows machine) and then entered the local username and my password that I have for it. I use my Microsoft Live account as a second layer so that I can back up stuff and read for the next huge change to how Windows will restore from the Cloud. Saw both users on the Windows Machine, got into those folders and accessed files just fine.

On the Windows Machine in Windows Features: SMB (Only SMBv1/CIFS Automatic Removal), SMB is also checked. I just use the Windows Firewall and have not made any changes to my Advanced Sharing. The only other thing that I can think of is a SMB Master Browser problem. In HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters I have that key set to Auto.

Thanks for all your responses but I've tried everything suggested. No luck!

I can't use the roll back feature as it's not available for some reason. I'm on version 1806 of windows. What I'm doing as I type is upgrading windows to the 1903 version to see if this resets any permissions that might have been locked out. It might be down to my MacOS and i'll just have to wait for a new update. I do remember that the connection failure did happen many years ago and then all of a sudden it just started working. Always the case eh!

I'll message back in a couple of hours once I've installed the 1903 update. Fingers crossed!

I updated, still the same issue. I can see my desktop from my macbook but it keeps saying connection failed when I open the network.

So annoying as a windows update can basically kill an entire network.

On the Windows 10 machine, try turning off password protected sharing. A feature update will always turn this back on as it is the default.

Yup I noticed this when I tried to access my desktop from my smart tv and asked for a pw. Thankfully that connects to my desktop fine after the update. Just MacOs problem.
