    Cisco Network Switch

    Hi,

Nothing to do with Windows 10 but had no where else to ask.

At the place I work our network switch is missing some ports. Is it possible to fit new ports or remove an existing port to another number?

Where can i buy new ports if im able to fit?

    Thanks

The actual port is missing so I can't plug anything in. See numbers 28 and 30 in picture.

My "guess" is that's a modular device, can add or remove things as needed. If in a business could be those sockets have been removed to disallow additional connections, which would just be another step in security of the network.

EDIT: forgot to add, best place to get replacement parts is from the maker of the device, get the model number and go to cisco.com to check it out.

Also, there may be no Ethernet cable attached to those empty sockets.

Simple. It's not a switch, but a panel. Your IT department can add those receptacles and patch to the actual switch if there is room.
It might have been left open for future expansion. Please speak with them.

    Hope this helps.

Could you post a larger pic? What you have in the picture looks very much like an external rj45 patch panel. Are the patch connections actually mounted on the switch housing?

When I used to work for a living, I had wired 100's of these type Cisco switches at different sites. Most had external patch panels to interface into the switch. On the switch end, there was a small multi-pin connector or 2 or 4 that was easy to remove, in case you had to change the switch.

That is correct. And a little dusty, too!
