Wanting to set network up from scratch as all settings messed up

I have a small network of 2 laptops (wireless) and 1 desktop (ethernet) PC, all are running Windows 10 Home 64bit with all current non-insider updates. Also clean of virus etc.

I have had periodic issues about running a home network, and I must have tried several dozen web sites with advice as to what services to ensure are running, what permissions are needed as well as what network discovery settings etc etc I'm sure that with all this mucking around, not all needed services etc may be running on each one.

Most are not well written, frequently failing to make it clear which device you should be doing a task on etc. I've also used the Win10 "Network reset" on all 3 devices with no real success. This step I've tried at least 5 or 6 times.

I'm now at the stage where I can see 1 laptop from my desktop, but not the other, but I cant access files.

What I need is to reset all permissions, services, network settings etc to default then start again with a web site that is clearly and well written, and describes all that needs to be set or unset.

Does anyone have any suggestions. From what I've seen any articles Ive found in the forum are mainly looing at specific points, not the whole picture.

I'm quite happy working through instructions, I just want a good clear explanation

First thing you need to understand is when you look for a PC it doesn't actually look it asks the master browser which is running on the network. When a PC is turned off it goes off the list and can take a long time to show when it's back on. That is only if you use PC name if you use IP it should show. Have you setup shares on all PCs with everyone having rights then set NTFS permission on the folder

    Hi Samuria

I have tried all sorts of individual settings changes.

What I need now is a clear well written guide to starting from scratch

With the attached batch script you can restore Windows services to default settings.

    Hi Colin,

Did you ever try FreeBooter's batch file to see if it helped?

I've got network issues also, and was thinking along the same lines as you regarding starting over from scratch.
I'm running Windows 10 Pro and have tried numerous fixes regarding connectivity with no success.

At this point Network Resest is even unresponsive.

These problems started after I installed the 1903 update

I've tried various netsh commands including the following:

    winsock reset
    interface ipv4 reset
    winsock reset catalog
    int ipv4 reset reset log

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns

I've also made another disturbing discovery. Boot up time has been increasing steadily and using regedit I noticed under

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles\

I had pages of redundant profileName(s) router.name nn (nn = 1 thru nn)
profileName(s) network nn (nn = 1 thru nn)

I deleted all of these exept the originals and on reboot they returned (nn = 16)

    i've also run DISM commands

    /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth (successfully)
    /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth (successfully)
    /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (failed at 84.1%)

I'm trying at all costs to avoid having to reset the OS as I have many programs I can't reinstall.

May I join in too? It seems now-a-days that every W10 update throws my home network off. I have a similar set-up to ColMac, except Win10 Pro. I have also followed his footsteps with no success. It seems all my settings are correct, yet while the 2 laptops can see the PC, the PC cannot see them and most of the time does not even show itself on the network!

I have run the bat file and all is reset, but no network apart from (now) the base PC, router, Plex server and a TV.

Is it best to remove the network completely and start again, and if so, how do I do that?

I tried networking or just sharing a file with my Dell XPS and macbook air, like i said, i tried.
with all this wifi and security concerns, this easy task we performed in 1998 is impossible or risky today on 2019
