WiFi 5Ghz

Just connected to the NBN (Optus) and received a Sagecom F@st3864V3 HP Modem.Router. No problems there but my Toshiba Qosmio Laptop will not pick up the 5ghz band only the 2.4Ghz...All my other devices pick up the 5Ghz.

I ran a cmd prompt netsh wlan show drivers and it says 802.11n is there so the wireless card supports 5Ghz. any idea how i can get this laptop to recognise 5Ghz.

Being an old n type doesn't mean it has 5g most new ones are AC type. We need make model of laptop and wireless card. If it is 5g it may be to far away as it doesn't travel as far as 2g

Hi folks

Most decent routers will provide both 2.4ghz and 5ghz simultaneously so it shouldn't be a problem --the new protocol will be ad as well for handling the new 5g very fast networks too.

If your router will only give you 2.4 OR 5ghz --i.e only supply 1 band of wi-fi get your isp (if they supplied it) to change it or get a new one.

The network adapter in the computer must also be able to receive 2.4ghz and 5ghz. The network adapter in @jeepers computer likely only supports 2.4ghz. It would be like trying to receive 100's of digital signal television channels on an old rotary dial type channel 2-13 TV. The channels are there, but the old TV can't receive them.

Yes obviously the computer must have receiving capability hardware -- but I've seen some ISP's still dishing out old routers that won't serve both 2.4 and 5 ghz signals simulataneously -- normally you can use the same SSID for both or have a separate SSID with a different password for each one.

BTW how's your "NAS" project going. Any probs -- just pm or post in the Virtualisation section.

Laptops produced at that time were Single Band N(2.4 GHz) cards, thus it has no 5 GHz capability.
My Toshiba Laptop from early 2014 is single Band N, a year later ~2015 they started using Dual Band Cards.
obviously yours is even older ~2012.

To double check, get Wireless chipset details from the Device Manager, and look up the chipset specs.

The OP stated that his other devices do operate on the 5ghz channel.

I haven't started the NAS replacement project yet. Just got back from camping now it's back to the regular work week. Thanks!
