Windscribe DOES hide your torrenting. I've tested this first hand. I downloaded a brand new movie released this year by not using a VPN, then downloaded another new movie put out by that same uploader by using Windscribe VPN. . I received a DMCA notice for the first one, cuz I did not use a VPN. I did NOT receive a DMCA Notice from the 2nd download. . . NOW, I don't download illegal files. I just wanted to put it to the test.
My point is that if you choose the wrong vpn, they do resell your information to companies that ask for it, including what ip you used to connect to their service originally. So don't get cocky in thinking "i've done it once I wasn't caught lol", because eventually whether it's from torrenting or via some other illegal activity... even with a vpn they will catch you if you choose wrong. Also, we're not discussing windscribe but vpn's as a whole.

Also, I find it pretty interesting that out of the 4 points I made, that's the one that you've decided to cherrypick...

Please give me a source, as I haven't read that all DNS services will be encrypted.

    Thanks.

My question is: would a new router hide these things or should I just go for a VPN? If I were to go for a router what would people suggest? If a VPN, I'd be tempted to go for NordVPN or one of the other top rated VPNs out there.

    Hoping someone can help out.

Hundreds of millions of people connect to the internet everyday (including 5 people in my family) without going through a VPN to do so. The greatest protection you have is being careful how you USE the internet much more than relying upon anti-this, anti-that, anti-everything software and VPNs for protection. A good name brand router that uses NAT IP address translation with firmware that is actively being supported by the manufacturer is all the protection you need, IMHO. Also keep an eye on your credit card and bank accounts for suspicious activity. I check mine at least once per week. Notify your banking company immediately if you detect unauthorized use.

Don't bite at every advertisement (including those disguised as "warnings" from your anti-whatever software) that claim you have to fix a "risk".

I wasn't cherry picking anything. . I done my research and I chose Windscribe out of all of the other hundreds of VPN's because they were the best reviews. . . So, you don't have to be a douche about it. IF i ever chose to torrent, I highly doubt I would be caught with Windscribe. . . I am 99% confident about it.

Don't believe everything you hear from VPN sites. They're trying to sell you a product.

Also a router is completely different from a VPN.

    Hi all
Thanks for all your responses to my initial enquiry. I do seem to have done a lot of reading in the last few days. However, there does seem to be some diverse ways of thinking about VPNs and I think it really all boils down to personal preference.
Whilst it is true to say we do not subscribe to any video service such Netflix and nor do we do any torrent downloading it is still true to say that for one reason or another both myself and my husband have had our card details attacked (forgot about that in my post) and we're just a bit concerned about our security because of this.
I suspect we shall end up going with a VPN (probably NordVPN) for this very reason. Plus there are the occasional video we have blocked to us.
Anyway thanks for all your responses. They have certainly been food for thought.

Just realize that if your concern is a hacker getting into your computer from the internet side, a VPN is not going to fix that. All a VPN will do is lessen the chances of a hacker eavesdropping on your communications, but does not protect your computer itself.

That your credit cards have been compromised is quite likely nothing to do with your PC's security in any way.

Apparently huge quantities of details of such things are available on the 'dark web'.

Bear in mind that if your card is contactless, someone passing close enough to you with the right bit of kit can read a lot of info from it. Think screened wallet, for example... or make sure your cards are contactless.

Further, if appropriate malware got onto your PC, and you had your card details on your PC without encryption, I suspect a VPN would not help.
