The Wi-Fi icon becomes grayed for few seconds during heavy speedtest, seems related to a lack of connectivity

Not sure I would make that conclusion. When your icon goes gray the speed stays over 680 Mbps and even hits 700+.
I might interpret that as the adapter is busy and when windows interrogates it to get status the adapter says I'm busy, I'll get back to you when I can.

The problem is that when goes gray the speed decrease for a while too.
Yes likely when windows says what is the status. What I saw was less than a 3% drop for less than a second.
Maybe another member knows a cure.
