    Network share issue--Windows 10 Pro x64 1903

    Hello All

    Symptoms:
Shared a folder on my external drive to backup another family members PC over the network, tried to use macirum reflect to the image, it seen the PC, but couldn't access the folder, even after entering Admin account & password into on client machine.

    Antivirus in use

Windows Defender On The Main Desktop, Laptop, 3rd Family PC currently using Avast Antivirus 19.5 (may switch when 19.6 releases and Avast supposely gonna remove more of it's files when uninstalled, shall see lol--if that ends up being the solution i take on this matter)

Main Desktop just clean installed to fix some issues

    Any help is appreciated
    Thank you

Is your Macrium a bought version?

Without Macrium, say if you just use file explorer can your id access any of the info in the folder? I ask as I see you just clean installed your desktop so I'm wondering if your new user id has access.

Macrium Free on All Systems, wanted to image the other Desktop, too lazy to move External drive to that system, and find a power cord on that system, so i was like i know i'll image over network

Should have access with new user id, did work from Laptop to Desktop

Laptop running same Antivirus if that matters as main Desktop, though might just convert Main Desktop, and Laptop to Avast Free as well in coming days, not so sure I like Defender fully yet lol, still deciding mostly on that

(Then again folks say Defender is enough, and Malwarebytes Free these days, so may just keep Laptop, Desktop Same)

Anyhow that's all I know so far

*Without Macirum cannot access any shared folder--tried that already from Mom's System, Tried that with Laptop this morning, and transferring just fine a large folder of Music*

The normal problem is people share a folder but don't set NTFS permission on the folder have you set NTFS permission?

Do believe i did set the permission, it has worked in the past when all systems was using Avast Free, decided to try Defender on Windows 10 Pro x64 1903 release on the newer systems

Heck Avast Free doesn't even have a firewall, should I think work with whatever Antivirus installed on the 3 systems, but even if I enter Admin account password, can't even access same folder on the External the Laptop was writing to before, over 3 hours to transfer all the music files

Sorry. From your desktop you are trying to backup a folder on an external drive.

On that same desktop can you access and navigate this folder with File explorer.

Free Macrium will not backup folders, only partitions as far as I know.

yeah well was gonna do the drive on that system, the entire thing from 3rd Desktop, 1st Desktop and Laptop can access the drive fine from network neighborhood, or with macrium relfect free, tried direct folder backup from Laptop to 1st Desktop, worked fine. 3rd Desktop no luck yet

    I'm not following sorry.

Macrium free will not backup folders only partitions.

you said you were successfully with a direct folder back up from laptop to 1st desktop. Was this direct backup with Macrium Free?

Which device has the external storage hard wired to it?

External drive was wired into Desktop #1, This wasn't a Macrium reflect free backup then, just normal Windows 10 Network share connection from Network neighborhood, So Network does work properly in terms of connection from Laptop to Desktop #1, Desktop #3 can't connect at all to same drive

*Does that explain it better, hopefully* and it's ok if it's hard to follow, I wrote previous replies that didn't explain things to well, only thing different on Desktop #3, is it's using Avast Antivirus Free still, otherwise software layout is same

This all sounds way to complicated for a back up solution. After all A reliable restore of a back up image is critical. I have found for the last 3 major upgrades that Networking Peer to Peer has been very unreliable with steps needed often to keep all network computer seeing each other. I would never go with anything but a internal hard drive with a External hard drive. Internal hard drives are not ideal for back up however for a simple resolvable windows issue it fast and safe to restore from a internal hard drive. Any Malware or Viral activity will require a external hard drive to restore from. I personalty would not rely on a network share for a Drive/SSD Image. Manual backing up files and folder can take a long time with many opportunities for errors on a peer to peer network. I use Norton and Malwarebytes both paid for versions and have never had an issue with either interfering with MR, Just MHO sorry no help on your issue My advise is to back up to an external drive. BTW WD Passports USB 3.1 are very fast up to 4 TB and don't need a power supply only a USB port and the faster the port the faster the back up.
