Windows 10 2019 build can not see the server-Workgroup
Hello,
I have this issue with Windows 10 that I was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction.
The situation is as follows…
The office is on a Workgroup network.
The office uses a Xerox MFP for all its users and has accounting codes set up for everyone.
The Xerox MFP scans to a shared network drive on the server where each user has their own drive that the documents are stored in.
On the laptops that are working, that drive is mapped to their individual laptop so they can retrieve and store scanned documents when they are in the office. All laptops are connecting via WiFi.
Each laptop does not need to see the other laptops, but the laptop in question can see a couple of laptops on the network. Maybe the other Windows 10 2019 laptops perhaps?
Even so, network discovery is turned on.
The laptop in question had Windows 10 2018 version and was working fine. The hard drive failed and IT installed a new hard drive and loaded Windows 10 2019 on the new drive.
Laptop uses the company WiFi for network access, as does everyone that uses it.
With 2018, I was able to search the company network and see the drive and map it. With the 2019 version I cannot see anything on the network and thus cannot map it.
Do you have any ideas how to fix this?
I did some searches on here and could not find anything.

Welcome to TenForums.
What is this server running? Is it a Windows server or something else? A NAS perhaps? If it's a NAS (particularly if it is an old one) then it may be that your server doesn't support SMB2 or later. Look at the settings on one of the working PCs. Under 'Turn Windows Features on or off' does it have 'SMB 1.0/CIFS Client' enabled?
If so, it is likely that your server only supports the old SMB1 and requires this to be enabled on your PC else you can't see the server. It is disabled by default in a clean install of Windows 10.

Is this a Domain? It is uncommon to tind a Workgroup setup in an office.

I wish it were a domain, at least I would have experience with that. Changing it to a domain would be a huge job with all the laptops, printers and other services. The workgroup was set up by another person. I know a bit about networks, but its not my field. I am a hardware guy.

That solution mentions turning on SMB 1.0 which is regarded as as security risk

@KaktusJaque hasn't yet said what sort of server is being used. As I said in post #3, if it is a legacy NAS (or something else that only supports SMB1) then there may be no option but to enable the SMB 1.0/CIFS Client.

It is a server and not a NAS, I just do not know what version. I will have to check, I do know its an older version.

You don't have to check on the server itself, you can check on any of the PCs that can connect to it which version of SMB they are using on the server connection. See this post for how to do that....
