    8821ce latency high on battery

Howdy all, first post - new member.

New-ish laptop, HP Ryzen 2500u - Vega 8, goes good in most ways.

Only real problem is high latency on wifi when on battery.
The wifi card is a Realtek 8821CE, of which there appears to be known problems of all kinds.

Initially the unit had the OEM OS (10 home), which I ditched soon after purchase.
I actually tried ramming 8x on it but couldn't get video drivers working (surprise surprise).

Then did a fresh install of 10 home and the problem still persisted.
I have since installed 10 LTSC and still have the problem.

I have tried all the drivers as they're released since the beginning of the year, currently on 2024.0.9.103.
Initially the unit had connection issues and along the way one of the drivers sorted that issue, however the high latency is not gone.

I've also tried various power plan configs (currently on ultimate), and various other different drivers for other items, and countless other tweaks found all over the interweb.

I've even spoken to HP support a few times, and they hit a brick wall and insist I send it in for service.
I don't wish to do that at this point, maybe not at all.

The ONLY thing which has made a difference, and which is a band-aid approach at best, is to disable "Microsoft ACPI-compliant control method battery" in device manager.
This sorts the high latency problem, however it takes away the battery level meter.
Not really a major issue as such, but an annoyance.

The HP tech maintained it must be a hardware issue given the above description, however I can't see how given that it can be sorted (sort of) by disabling ACPI blah blah blah.

I've hit a brick wall with this and still feel it's a driver issue of the wifi card, but am obviously not certain.
Otherwise the laptop operates very well, but this puts a damper on it somewhat.

The machine is generally up to date with the important drivers, has shutup 10, WUB, and a few other things to streamline this hobbled OS.

    Any ideas?

What is the exact model of the Laptop? Latency can be caused by a number of issues, not necessarily due to being on battery. You can always pop out the card and get an Intel mini-PCIe or a m.2 if it takes the later.

    HP 15-db0125au.

    I personally think it's a driver/ACPI issue.
On AC it's perfecto, on DC it's terrible.

Latency monitor points to the wifi card.

My next step was to try an Intel equivalent card, but I'm not sure which one to grab.
This one only has 1 antenna and as far as I'm aware I can use a dual antenna one but not use BT.

    Does that sound right?

I don't use or need BT so...

Nope. It can be caused by not having set for Max Performance in Power Settings, to just using an overloaded or poorly set up Access Point, crappy website, or trying to use someone’s private server on a consumer grade Internet Connection, which would have low mbps Upstream. You can use iPerf on your network to check connection with WIFI, with a desktop set as server and the laptop set as client.

Not every laptop or desktop would show Bluetooth. All chipsets now come with BT as a part of the WIFI part of the chip.

Check your power settings. I have a laptop that defaults the processor cooling policy to "passive" when on battery and that absolutely kills performance. I had to change it to "Active".

Control Panel > Power options > Change plan settings > change advanced power settings > Processor power management > System cooling policy

Understood, but in my case it is none of those things as I've covered all those bases (many times over).
I've been dealing with this and fault finding for months.

Do you know which card is equivalent/compatible/most suitable?

Yeh gone through all those settings multiple times.
    I currently use ultimate performance.

Changing the processor state and cooling state has no little to no effect, and changing the wifi performance also shows little change.

Also check the settings for the WIFI adapter in Device Manager, to make sure that Power Management is unchecked and adjust the properties for the adapter. I have found that the Realtek adapters OEM’s put into their machines are garbage. Going with the Intel adapters you see a lot of headaches go away.

    Yup, done all that too.
And have also heard that about the Realtek.

    The plot thickens...

I Ditched the 8821CE and installed an Intel 7265.
Interestingly it behaves as it should on AC and DC, problem solved... Sorta.

However, it has a new problem whereby it slows down and sometimes even disconnects when the lid is closed on both AC and DC.
Lid behavior settings are where they should be in power options.

    Can't win...

Some devices cannot be overridden for standby when lid closed.
