SMB, Network Issues and a Hidden Network Question...

I updated to 1903 and now I can't file share between two PC (one is updated, the other isn't). So I read the tutorial on this site, which has an option to enable SMB. Does this expose a security issue? What is the best "how-to" to set up file sharing on Win10 machines?

Lastly, the non-updated Win10 machine now has a "Hidden Network" that displays when I click the wifi icon. Is this a bad thing? Does it need to be removed?

Thanks in advance for any help!

SMBv1.0 is downgraded because it was from the NT4/Win2k days. SMBv3.x is the current standard for NT6/10.x/Linux Kernal 2.x/3.x/MacOS 10.x. A Hidden network is one that the SSID beacon is turned off. Usually a beacon for a utility device and usually on Channel 11. To see all WiFI beacons that your adapter sees, open Powershell, then see Viewing Wireless Networks with PowerShell Legacy Commands -- Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine Online. For Cmd, just enter netsh wlan show networks.

    Thanks Bro67.

So, I think I enabled all of the SMB options - should I disable all of them? I'll look into the Powershell Legacy Commands a little later.

    Thanks again.

No, the SMBv1 needs to only be the one unchecked. The other two SMB (block & direct) need to stay enabled.

    Interesting...

My 1903 build has a SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support along with 3 sub options for Automatic Removal, Client and Server.

My older Win10 build has those options along with a SMB Direct option.

    No "Block" option.

I gave up and weirdly enough, the next day I had access to the other PC. Now it's gone. WTH?

Where is the best step-by-step guide that is up-to-date (includes 1903) for resetting and starting from scratch to set up a home network? I think I have to go back to square one.

    Thanks!
