Perhaps I can quote from Shakespeare " methinks the Lady Doth protest too much" !!!

I'm sure if there's no internet etc you'll soon know it.

Good find. Another nice tool for my arsenal.

    Thanks.

Replacing four different icons (which distinguish four different network conditions) by one "universal" is another step of creating new operating system named Windows for Idiots. Exactly in the style of "Immersive" (sic!) Control Panel (internal name of Settings app).

I too find the new icon inconvenient. I am working on a network issue where there is no connection for 7 seconds, then no network access for 23 seconds as I test 10G network adapters for adoption here. The new icon tells me nothing.

All the icons are stored in %systemroot%\System32\pnidui.dll.

Unlike some other functions in Windows, there are no references to it in the registry that I can find that reference the specific icons used.

I hope someone finds away to restore the old icons.

What ever possessed Microsoft to make such a ridiculous change? Some of their developers must be bored :)

As I said, the icon is fine when the PC is connected and there's internet access, the issue is with other circumstances

This is really weird. I've seen that new "world" icon for the WiFi after the 1903 update, but I can't see it now, both cable ethernet and WiFi are showing right now the icons that've been always there in W10. How do I trigger the new icon and what does it mean?

At first, when I update a few days ago, I thought it was the new WiFi icon, but it's not there anymore.

Globe only shows up if all network adapters are not connected to any type of networking.

    On mine there are at least 3 situations;
    1. When there is no network connection
    2. When there are network connections but cannot connect to any of those connections (Eg unplugged cable)
    3. When there are network connections and windows can't get an IP address and we get the dreaded 169.254.x.x address

Trying to work with netgear on some networking issues. I had to downgrade back to 1809 to get the old behavior back so I could see the different icons. With 1903 any of the unconnected states show the white globe and no way to tell which state the connections are in.

OK, then I don't see the problem, guys:
    1. If there's no network connection (no cable, no WiFi), instead of showing the WiFi icon or the monitor icon with a cross, you get the world icon with a forbidden sign. That's fine.
    2. If the cable is unplugged, and you are not connected to any network, you're in situation 1, what's the deal?
    3. If you get an invalid IP, which means, you are still not connected to a network. I don't know if in that case, the world icon still shows a forbidden sign or if that sign changes, but I don't understand why would you want to roll back to the previous version. Exactly, what do you loss here?

There are several states to a network connection. Each of those states shows a different icon.
Apart from the fact that the globe is white with an essentially invisible white "forbidden sign", when trying to track those network states you cannot.

I'm implementing 10G here. There are currently issues that could be the NIC (Driver or Firmware), which could be brand specific, and/or switch issues. In working with Aquantia, ASUS, Rosewill and Netgear all have asked the time the network spends at each state. That's not possible with the dumbed down globe.

The globe icon shows in all connection states until a few seconds AFTER an Internet connection is established.

Here's another situation; I often block internet access by setting an invalid gateway IP on my adapter so I have network access but no Internet access. For all intents and purposes the "Network" is connected and operational. The globe is displayed.

The icon was called for well over a decade (at least up until 1809) NCSI - NETWORK connection status indicator. Now it's more ICSI - INTERNET connection status indicator.

Anyway, the work around is simply to have 1809 installed on my test machine and I can do the testing. I have to keep swapping cards around each time I want to test a different brand which has added many hours to the testing and is extremely frustrating, but it is a workaround.

However I foresee in the future Microsoft in their "wisdom" decide to dumb things down even further and testing will become more problematic. Heck, Microsoft don't test things at all these days and they are just going to continue to make things harder for people who do.

    Such is life :)
