Waking-up other PC

    Waking-up other PC

My two PC's (A and B) are part of the home network. A has access to folders on B, no problem. The power settings on B are balanced. After a certain time B will go in the sleep (or energy saving) mode. In that situation, A is not able anymore to wake-up B (before some Windows updates A could indeed wake-up B). In the power management of the network adapter of B, I checked "allow this device to wake the computer", but that did not solve the issue. Any ideas?

PiKo, how exactly are you trying to wake the other computer? Are you sending a magic packet via Wake On LAN?

If that is the issue, try turning off fast boot - for some systems, including mine, this prevents wake on LAN from operating properly.

Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable.

Uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)".

There are also some specific settings in BIOS to check, but let's start with this.

PiKo, how exactly are you trying to wake the other computer?
Just by clicking the shortcut, linking to the folder on B. The internal HDD on B does not start spinning, when B is sleeping.

Uncheck "Turn on fast startup (recommended)".
That was already unchecked on B (and A).

I've never heard of a way to wake up a PC that is in a sleep state over the network other than by using Wake On LAN or via a lights out board. But I wonder if being in a lighter sleep state might allow for waking up this way.

I know that some BIOSes will allow you to set the sleep state. In your BIOS, try setting a lighter sleep state. The lower the number, the lighter the sleep state. For example, an S1 sleep state is a lighter sleep state than S2.

Again, I'm not sure if this would work, but maybe it's worth a try.

Just disable the go-to-sleep setting for computer B.
