Remote Desktop second window not accessible (Help!)

This is one of the strangest things and it started on Monday (or at least that's when I first noticed it).

When I try to remote into a machine and I give it the login name, normally it will pop up a window asking for the password. It's sort of doing that, but I can't see or access the window. The only way I can even see it is by mousing-over the icon in the taskbar. Like this:

Name:	bug.JPG
Views:	5
Size:	97.4 KB
ID:	233119

I can't access it, click cancel, or escape it. The only way I can get rid of it is to "end task" on remote desktop via task manager.

    Any suggestions?

So I see that the small dialog box that asks for credentials is somehow displayer larger than the whole screen. I wonder if it could be a display driver issue. Make sure that your display driver is up to date.

Also, make sure there is not some errant copy of Remote Desktop on your system. Try running %windir%\system32\mstsc.exe directly to see if it behaves the same way.

mstsc has the same result. Updating my graphics driver. I am running two monitors at 2560 x 1440.

I updated my graphics driver, and that didn't fix it, although I've found if I leave it up for awhile, and then go back to it, I can enter credentials. I'll keep playing with it and post results here.

    Have you run

    sfc /scannow

? You didn't say what type of graphics you are using. amd, nvidia, etc. Might be an idea to use a tool like DDU in safe mode to completely remove graphics driver and then re-install. Have driver update on computer.

Official Display Driver Uninstaller DDU Download

Always good to have a system Image on hand should something go wrong. Even something like this issue could be resolved restoring to time when all was working. Lots of tools out there, I mention Macrium Reflect in many posts however it is not the only tool.

Running sfc now. It's an Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB. Macrium Reflect is a great program...

I'm curious as to what caused it in the first place. I know using RDP or Chrome RD (or any RD for that matter) often resizes the desktop, and I'm thinking it must have somehow gotten fouled up, although I've been using both of those for years with no problems.

    Very strange issue...

No integrity violations with sfc /scannow

With an Image in hand I would do DDU in safe mode and re-install graphics driver.

It consistently will pop up if I just wait a few minutes, so I'll just use it as is. If I find another solution. I'll post it here.

    Thanks!

Did you run DDU in Safe Mode?

Are there any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager?

Nope, but I cleaned and re-installed anyway, but it didn't change anything. I even tried it after cleaning, before installing drivers, but same result.

Then I would do a repair install. Of course the easiest route right now means you would get 1903 and I'm not recommending that.

Do you have boot media for the version you are currently running?
