    Virgin Media kept changing Internal IP address of computer ???

    Hi there
    Visiting a colleague recently near London UK who was on Virgin Media I noticed that my laptop's internal IP address was getting changed quite frequently -- even without re-boots on 192.168.x.x so my file sharing and streaming got broken.

    Usually my experience is that once you've booted up a computer even when DHCP is selected that IP address (at least the INTERNAL LAN one) doesn't change until re-boot - if then. The external IP address can change - not an issue .

    My previous experiences with Virgin Media in the past haven't been that great - however it's not my house so not up to me so I can't dump that "provider" - terrible service if any Brits reading this are thinking of switching to them -- DON'T !!!! - but is there any way I can prevent this hapenning in future - I don't really want to use a fixed IP address but if the internal LAN address can get hosed up then it creates problems. Also would hose me up back in my own house where lan addresses are different anyway.

    Cheers

    If your 192.168 address keeps changing this will be a setting in your router to release and then renew the IP address after a set amount of time.

    Log into your router, go to the DHCP settings and set the IP lease time to Forever.

    Failing this, you would have to set static IP addresses, which again can be done via logging into the router and making the change :)

    Hi there

    @kingtez1984

    Thanks for the suggestions . But :

    On that Virgin box - big black thing about the size of a 12 inch old Vinyl record in its album cover --looks like something Her Majesty Queen Victoria could have used had there been Internet back then !!! there's absolutely no settings for this -- that was the first thing I thought of -- the Virgin supplied box is a really limited thing which basically only gives users ability to turn on / off wifi and set password and whether 2.5 or 5GHZ wifi should be used --you can't even run both together !!! --If it were me I would have ditched them long ago !! -- there's not even a way to port forward on that stupid box either.

    However I've finally convinced him to switch providers -- more modern box and 35 GBP a month instead of over 100 GBP which Virgin were charging for a really hideous and slow service plus another 25 GBP for a landline that nobody uses or wants -- seems a lot of people mis out on easy deals because they are so used to what they currently have.

    I'll set it all up next time I'm over there -- amazing with a couple of mouse clicks you can save around 1200 - 1500 GBP a year !!!! That would keep me in beer for donkeys years !!!!. I think he was amazed that a foreigner can find these cheap deals -- why not - Money is a "Universal Constant" !!! and there's no need to have less of it than you have to. Could be the Brits have other problems on their minds currently --that's their business though.

    There's some good "Introductory" deals currently in UK - rediculously cheap if you shop around-- he doesn't need 1 Tb/s cable speed -- 35 - 50 Mb/s is perfectly good enough for his needs and Netflix works fine on that sort of speed too.

    At home in Iceland I have much faster but when running e-commerce and some server stuff etc you do need it -- just for basic Internet and streaming services basic 35 - 50 Mb/s is more than suitable.

    Cheers
