Cannot turn on wireless adapter after clean install of Win10

A couple years ago I upgraded my brother's Lenovo T420 Thinkpad from Win7 to Win10. All went well. No issues at all. Skip to present. For some reason the system would not boot to Windows. I opted to do a clean install. That went without issue, except now I cannot seem to turn on the wireless adapter / radio.

    • Windows Wifi settings radio is ON
    • Checked physical switch on side - ON
    • Checked BIOS - Nothing there
    • Checked Wireless ON/Off function key. They seem to work with other functions. Just do not turn on or off the wireless radio.
    • Went to Intel website and installed latest driver for the adapter
    • Went to Lenovo website. They do not offer Windows 10 support/driver etc for this model. When I try using their automated scanner to select the correct drivers and utilities it locks up. I assume because I am running Win10 and Win10 is not supported.
    • Since the original WIn7 x64 drivers and utilities worked before I was going to manually download and install, but their nomenclature is confusing. Software is listed Thinkpad, Laptop, Desktop, ThinkCentre. This is a Thinkpad laptop. Which do I download?

The bottom line is that the wireless adapter worked fine after upgrade from Win7, but will not turn on since the clean install of Win10.

Does anyone have any suggestions other than tell my brother I broke his laptop

I'd simply buy a new wireless adapter. They plug into USB. They're generally under $50 for a brand-name.

I'd avoid the no-name $10 junk on Ebay ... or anything made by TP-Link as seen here: i am facing a lot of problems

Even these USB wireless devices don't always survive to the new OS. My old laptop used just such a USB wireless on Win XP and Win 7 ... but it wouldn't work on Win 8 or 10.

So it may be fruitless to try to get your pre-10 wireless to work with Windows 10.

Wow. Now way to turn it back on again? I know you are right, but I hate to give up if someone has had this before and knows how to fix it.

OK. I am updating for the sake of anyone else who runs in to this. The following worked for me.

There seems to be something to do with the Lenovo app for Energy Management. I tried to download the app, but it would not install in the Win10 environment. I did another search Windows 10, Power Management. It landed me on a Lenovo webpage which clearly stated that the former Power Management app would not run in Win10, but to download Lenovo Vantage app in Windows Store. After downloading and updating the Wifi card is now working.

I still a little uneasy, though. Even though it is working I did not configure it in anyway for the Wifi card. The wifi just started working. I see no Lenovo app in the system tray.
