    Advice on WAP

Hoe this is the correct forum

have created WAPs from old routers in the past and worked well. Need to set one up for a family member, but require the WAP to have a strong a signal ( as the router ) as possible.

does it make a lot of difference if I use an old BT or other router, should I buy a new router and convert, or is it best to buy a purpose made WAP ?

    many thanks

Things have moved on in recent years with Wireless to two Bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and ac Wireless Standards, on more channels.

An old single band G standard WAP in an old Router is not so much use now.

WAPs are limited to a certain ERP (estimated radiated power). Whether they are within a Router box or a separate box.

The routers I have are dual band 2.4 and 5.0 would that be sufficient ? What else should I look for to make a decent WAP ?

or maybe buy a new router to convert, would that be a better option ?

looked at dedicated WAPs but they are wireless only....I.e. no LAN ports, which a converted router would have...

when end I said power I meant Wi-fi connectivity

    UPDATE
the house I am to fit a WAP has only 11mbps.....max, standard phone line internet. So maybe won’t need to spend any money on fast powerline adapters or router to convert to a WAP. Wonder if a 5 year old router may be enough....
what would be regarded the minimum spec for a used router to use as a WAP in this circumstance ?
    thanks
