How do I set my VPN as metered connection

    Hi,

I have a limited bandwidth on my internet so I have my connection set to metered. The problem is when I connect to a VPN that metered connection gets overridden(?) and all the updates start downloading. There's no option on my VPN as well about anything remotely containing metered connections so... How do I use my VPN while keeping the metered connection active so the updates won't automatically start downloading?

    Thanks!

Hi, suggest you need a different method.

May I ask why you're blocking Windows updates? Compatibility?

    A bunch of reasons really.

One of them is as you said Compatibility. I've lost count on how many times I've had to roll back because something broke after an update.

Second is space. I have no idea why but updates have been getting bigger and bigger that my SSD is filling faster than ever. It's like Microsoft thinks people running W10 has unlimited drive space for all their updates/services of which most of it comes out being unused anyway (in my case anyway). What's worse is I heard that they will grab 7GB of space just for updates (really why would you do this...) which I really don't have to spare.

Lastly, is bandwidth. Like I said in my opening post my internet has a monthly cap. I would rather use whatever I have on things I need & want. By the end of the month if I still have room to spare then I'll update then.

So there is no other way aside from using that tool you linked?

Hi, I've upgraded continually from 1511 to 1809, skipping 1803. My C: is 127Gb, 60Gb used (after having run Ccleaner) on a 256Gb disk. My personal files are on another partition. I have a LOT of programs installed.

Updates should not be a continual means by which the size of Windows on disk increases. Indeed, the 6 monthly upgrade cycle is a sort of reset- Windows.old is created, then deleted, and then the update sequence commences again.

You can remove the installers for Windows updates (which allow you to uninstall them) using Disk clean-up, with the appropriate option, and thus save space once having received updates after the most recent upgrade.

The 7Gb space reserved is an attempt by MS to protect people from a cause of upgrade failure. (How people who use systems with 32Gb Emmc manage I can't imagine).

I expect you have this off as is widely recommended:

and you may be aware of this

If you search, you will find other tools for disabling updates, some are mentioned on tenforums. I can't comment on how effective they are, but be aware MS makes it hard to definitively disable updates.

Another option you might consider is to download updates on another PC elsewhere if you have access to one at all.

The News section includes a thread per update per build with download links.

    ---------------------------------------------
Having blocked updates, one of two free tools can be used to scan for updates- choose what you want using checkboxes.

Windows Update Minitool; Windows Update Manager (Wumgr)

Bear in mind that if you stay on a particular build and do not upgrade, it has a limited service life after which you may be offered no more updates.

You might try running one tool such as Ccleaner to clean your disk. You can see how space is used visually with a free tool such as Wiztree- this can be very helpful.
