Tracert or ping not working, general failure

    Hello,

I tried a tracert today and it failed. I tried it a few different ways and the results are below.

    C:\Windows\System32>tracert bbc.co.uk

    Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [151.101.192.81]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

    1 * General failure.

    Trace complete.

    C:\Windows\System32>tracert BBC - Home

    Tracing route to gtmlivelive-eu-c-1nlbwwwcouk-17e0f31403454351.elb.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com [3.120.156.170]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

    1 * General failure.

    Trace complete.

    C:\Windows\System32>tracert -4 BBC - Home

    Tracing route to gtmlivelive-eu-c-1nlbwwwcouk-17e0f31403454351.elb.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com [35.156.134.252]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

    1 * General failure.

    Trace complete.

I also tried it with ping with similar results.

    C:\Windows\System32>ping BBC - Homepage

Pinging gtmlivelive-eu-c-1nlbwwwcom-8168f86a0c0d146f.elb.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com [18.195.39.25] with 32 bytes of data:
    Request timed out.
    General failure.
    General failure.
    General failure.

    Ping statistics for 18.195.39.25:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

Can anyone help figuring out why this is happening?

    Regards, Henry

    Edit....

I also tried with the firewall off with the same results.

Hi, are you in Finland? Can you normally view the BBC site from there, or are you using a VPN?

Do you have such a problem with any other site?

    ping bbc.co.uk
works for me here in the UK

    What happens if you
    ping amazon.com
    for example?

I have also tried an online tracert, Online Visual Traceroute Tool - Monitis, with similar results

Forgive the obvious question - can you browse normally? Other than ping and tracert, is there any other evidence of internet problems?

    Discussed here with some ideas:
Ping and Tracert return General Failure

    Offers a detailed possible explanation:
traceroute - What could cause a ping to fail if I am able to load the sites homepage in a browser? - Stack Overflow

    Hi Dalchina,

I had a read of the link and made a new hosts file, reset and tried again with the same results. I have no problems with my internet other than this.

Is it possible I am being prevented from tracing the route my connection is taking as its going somewhere before its destination, as in stopping off somewhere on route?

Hi, seems the URLs in my previous post were somehow combined so clicking on this one didn't work:
traceroute - What could cause a ping to fail if I am able to load the sites homepage in a browser? - Stack Overflow
    - I've modifed that post (cutting and pasting the text worked).

    E.g.
ping is a utility which sends an ICMP "echo request" message to a machine, who, if it is supported and enabled, will reply back with the same packet that was sent to it.

The website is being served by a webserver listening on TCP port 80.
These are two totally different services, and one, both, or neither could be enabled on any machine.
What you are probably seeing is that the machine you are connecting to has a webserver running, but has ICMP requests disabled. Also, any number of firewalls could exist between you and this box, any of which could be filtering out ICMP traffic.
In fact, recent versions of Windows disable ICMP ECHO in the default firewall rules. It has to be explicitly enabled.
    - so browsing might work, but not ping- different protocol. That should give you a direction for investigation.

    Hi Dalchina,

From what Ive read it seems there can be reasons outside of my control such as external firewalls that prevent packets been accepted and therefore sending a return, which is fair enough as I guess it could stop DOS attacks. Tracert requests though are different and I can not understand why im not getting even a single step along its path. I just dont know. Ideally id like another computer or maybe another connection to try .

Unless you have any other ideas I think ill leave it at that. Thanks again Dalchina

Hi, if you don't have another internet enabled device, one thing you could do to eliminate PC settings from this would be to use a live boot disk such as Kyhi's - available from near the top of the Software and Apps section here.

Boot from that and try those commands.

Ill give that a try and report back, thanks Dalchina
