So even if I use a VPN my ISP will still be able to see my IP and what I'm downloading? So whats the point to having a VPN then? I don't get it.
    See my above post.

Your ISP may not but what about the VPN provider?

@yahanna - @jl2509 - If you think that a VPN will give you complete anonymity, think again.
All you have to do is commit a crime using a VPN and then your respective theories can be duly tested. Please don't do it, lol. What is does do is allow you another layer of privacy when using the general internet.
As a matter of fact, I'm using one right now.
Hi Compumind. But would a VPN prevent your ISP from completely seeing what youre doing?

Do you tunnel through your ISP?
It can be done. However, if you are doing nothing illegal, no worries!

Lets be serious here, this is not about total anonymity where we can hide from "crimes"

A VPN "WILL" help protect you when accessing an open network and "WILL" hide your IP from the view of others connected whilst encrypting your connection and will make it more difficult, although not impossible to hack you.

    Nothing is 100% secure.

Yes I use my ISP exclusively. I was sent 2 DMCA notices from my ISP after it noticed that I was downloading torrents. I want to make sure that if I do get a VPN that its good enough to hide me from getting a 3rd notice from my ISP.

    1) You can try the VPN and see if they send you a 3rd warning.
    2) You can test with a free Proxy Server (not recommended.)
    3) You can abandon using Torrents.

I don't know what you are seeding/downloading and I don't want to know.
If it is legit, you should appeal to your ISP and have those warnings reversed.

    FWIW.
