How to network Win10 to win7 with no homegroup in win 10 now?

Sorry if this is common but I upgraded a machine to win10 yesterday and I want to transfer over my files from my win7 unit.

Home group is talked about a lot in the tutorials on the web but seemingly in a recent upgrade that is no longer an option in win10.

So can some kind person point me to how its now done please as I am struggling. I am no techie so easy does it please.

The same way as it always has been, through Workgroups. Right click on the folder you wish to share and choose Share, select the user or everyone that has access and either password protect. Try using the Public folders for transfers between computers, not the personal folders for the user. Homegroup was a disaster from the beginning and did nothing to make it easier in those environments with devices that did not have Homegroup capabilities.

There are many tutorials around on home groups and I have never in the past 20 or so years networked before.

So I repeat can someone point to a tutorial please in a non condescending way?

    Thanks

Tutorials are at the top in the Tutorial link and also at the top of this forum.

Yes there are. Seemingly thousands of. Is there a relevant one?

Thanks I was just looking at that but it seems to be 10 to 10 only. I am losing the will to live. I have hundreds of folders in the win7 libraries and it seems it has to be done by each folder and I just tried to make one "share" went through the process and the message came up: you cant do this. So...

Rather waste more time on networking which as ever seems impossible I will add the folders to a portable hard drive and then import them. Nice and simple. I have tried networking with every upgrade since windows began and never ever has it worked for me. Nothing changes right enough.

No, the network setup works the same way with Win7-Win10, WinXP-Win7, WinXP-Win10 [not just Win10-Win10]. I have used all these combinations and the only thing that differed at all was where to find each bit in the older versions.

Just picking up on points you raised -
    - I have only two shares [the highest level folder within my own Documents & the highest level folder within a separate folder tree that contains my media files]. The sharing reaches down from those highest level folders into all their subfolders so everything is accomplished with just those two shares.
    - If you do not need continual working between the different computers then copying across using an external drive will suit you.
    - If you share a high level folder [such as an entire drive] then subfolders with special permissions will return errors but that is not necessarily a problem. If you share at the level of your own folders only then this will not happen. So, for example, sharing C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents should not throw up errors but sharing C:\Users\YourUserName probably does.

In here there is only one tutorial that deals with Network sharing.

SMB/SaMBa networking is the same, regardless of the OS. For Windows, the setup procedure is the same. It is very easy and straightforward for the tutorial on here.
