    Hi folks

    @lolcocks

    Take samuria's advice

    @Samuria excellent advice - just adding my comments.

    Just buy a domain from a decent hosting server and set up your own VPN / server or whatever -- the annual costs these days of getting a decent domain with a load of proper applications etc have plummeted dramatically in recent years -- depending on what you want to do there are options to suit every pocket and with working solutions straight out of the box e.g forum software, e-commerce, email servers, web design (wordpress is usually included as a freebie even on the cheapest plans) etc etc.

    Cheers

    Is there a particular reason why I should get a VPN server?

    Like, my current plan was to setup a Windows Domain for group policy and a DNS server in my local network.

    For the same DNS server to be accessed by computers in my domain from outside, will I need a VPN? Or is direct access possible but risky?

    Sorry, but, although I am well versed with Windows 10 and it's features, I am completely new to Windows Server features.

    Hi there.

    @lolcocks

    depends on what applications you need to run or files you want to share from your domain -- unless you want a full blown windows virtual desktop infrastructure etc on a server (I.e you logon remotely from your laptop and the server presents you with a Windows desktop) you probably don't need to set up a full blown VPN -- any decent hosting service should have their hosting servers secure - all you need to do is control who can access what.

    These days hosting prices are extremely reasonable -- all depends on what you want to do,

    Another solution would be to look at a cloud based option - charges would be based on the amount of usage.

    However if you are struggling with this just hire an I.T consultant for a few hours - or even a day -- this is fairly easy for an experienced professional guy to set up. judging by the sheer numbers of Indian people working in I.T one sees everywhere these days I'd imagine it should be really easy to find one in your home country.

    Sit down first - just with a paper pad and a pen and write down exactly what you want - or think you want and then discuss it with boss and some I.T pro --then once you are all satisfied just build and implement it.

    I have a feeling that you haven't done the first level analysis of what you actually want -- also remember if you buy something like Windows server you will also need Client Licenses (i.e people who logon to the server). Ms tends to use a "per seat" type of model which could be rather expensive -- the older ms servers e.g Windows 2003 / W23K server allowed up to 4 CALs included with the product -- that model doesn't exist any more unfortunately.

    Cheers

    I see. Thank you. Maybe I will really look into hiring or atleast getting advice from an IT professional for a day or two.

    Quick question, you said I will need client licenses.
    All laptops in here are running Windows 10 Pro licenses (upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate but later clean installed using their keys).

    Will those Windows 10 Pro licenses work or I need different licenses to connect to my Windows 2019 Server?

    Hi there

    @lolcocks

    depends on what they are acessing -- for instance if it's Office they will need license for that -- you'll need licenses for any central software they can use from the server

    I think you need to google a bit for Microsoft licensing - it's quite complex and "way beyond my Pay grade" !! -- I do know though you can't just have say one copy of office on a server and 15 or more people all being able to use it concurrently without some type of volume license.

    something like this might start you off

    Microsoft Licensing Guides | Licensing School

    however using Ms software for commercial purposes does need careful guidamce of the rules -- not like individual stuff for home computers -- and Ms has some powerful Lawyers if you make a mistake !!!!!

    I see.
    I thought it was something else entirely.

    I can use the current Office licenses I currently have individually on all the computers.
