Why is my internet connection so slow in Windows 10?

Hi. Hope someone can help here. I have two Windows 7 PCs which connect to my 'BT Home Hub': since they sit right next to the hub, I connect them with a LAN cable. I get download speeds of around 75Mbps.

My Windows 10 laptop (HP Envy 360) though, which connects via the home wi-fi, more often than not has real problems with online tasks hanging. At the moment I get less than 1Mbps and can't even access my email.

I don't know if this is because of Windows 10 and/or my settings (though on occasions things do run OK, so not sure that that could be the reason) or the wi-fi... Before I phone my internet provider, can anyone suggest some suitable troubleshooting steps? The HP laptop has no ethernet port so I can't just plug in a cable (I guess there is a converter available, but I don't have one).

I will try unplugging one of the PCs and see how it gets on, but I then have to set it up for wi-fi instead... But meanwhile...?

    Thanks!

Have you tried setting a fixed wireless channel on your Hub rather than letting the hub decide? This can really help with wi-fi issues although 75 to 1Mb is pretty drastic.

Certainly try it first though. Which Hub is it out of interest?

I edited my post whilst you were replying... BT Home Hub 5. I don't want to change any hub settings really, as it works just fine for the PCs. Or maybe the change you are thinking of would not affect anything connected via a cable?

Networking/Internet is not my 'area of expertise' at all, so stuff like 'setting a fixed wireless channel' means nothing to me I am afraid. Sorry!

    Thanks.

It won't change anything cable wise and you can always change it back to the default in seconds. I use a Hub 3 and Open Reach Modem and did this years ago as my speed kept dropping to around 8Mb from its then normal 40 to 50Mb. The cause I suspect was interference from neighbours devices. Since doing this its been 100% reliable and often top 55-65Mbs now (Wi-Fi).

Hub 5 instructions are here (part way down the page).

I use Channel 1 and changing it is as easy as clicking the dropdown and picking a number. The default is an option to click to get back to where you were.

    This is the Hub 3

Just found this very old post of mine over on the W8 forum. Seems my speed did drop to around 1Mb... it was a long time ago

Bit wrapped up in other stuff at the moment but will follow up the links etc. as soon as I can and post back.

My download speed on the laptop is variable BTW - I have tried a connection speed test several times today: ranges between <1Mbps and c.12Mbps, as compared to the Win 7 LAN speed of up to 80Mbps max. But that never falls below 70..

    Many thanks.

OK. Good luck, and it only takes moments to try and wont screw anything up. Fwiw I just tried Speedtest on my Hub 3 just now and it came in at >71Mbs via Wireless.

    Hi
It is Wireless settings in the BT Home Hub 5 that may need changing which has nothing to do with Ethernet, or Windows 10 as such.
The Wireless Card in your Laptop is Dual Band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. So is your BT Home Hub 5.

You have to go through your BT HH5 wireless settings to check at the very least. To get speeds like 75 Mbps you will have to enable both bands. 2 channels per band with that Laptop which has a 2 x 2 Wireless Card.

In the reference given under BT Home Hub 5 points 6.and 7.

There does not seem to be any sort of decent PDF manual for the BT Home Hub 5.

    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/d...id/56414/c/346

In Windows 10 click on the Task bar Network icon, below the Wireless networks shown, click on "Networks and Internet settings". The Network troubleshooter might help or settings related to WiFi, network etc.

I would not worry about channel numbers at the moment.
On my Laptop upstairs with 2.4 GHz, I get 10 on Ch 1, 8 on Ch 6, 13 on Ch 11, 2 on Ch 10. All at least -20 dBm relative to mine, which essentially means no problem.
Similarly on 5 GHz 11 on Ch 36, 3 on Ch 44, 5 on Ch48, 1 on Ch 100 again all at least -20 dBm. So no problem.

Really for technical users, but you can download a Windows 10 App from the MS Store "WiFi Analyzer", free basic version is good enough.

The Hub 3 I'm using doesn't even support 5GHz and my wireless adapter is officially unsupported for W10 (Intel Centrino N-1030) yet achieves pretty good throughput.

The problem with the Smart Wireless on the Hubs (my experience) is that it does not reliably seem to detect what's going on around it and it can end up 'stuck' on a 'bad' channel. Once in that state it remains like that until rebooted... or until you take control and pick a channel that offers more consistent performance.
